Frame It! Pillow
I did.
I made the pillow top.
I decided to make the top like this:
it’s simple and straightforward! But not hard. I used up all those extra pieces of 9 patch strips. All of the pieces.
I cut a 1” strip of that tomato red to put in there before I added some more sage green. I then trimmed it down to about 19”. I want it to be able to hold an 18” pillow form. Of course, I can make my own pillow form by sewing a piece of white fabric into a square and then filling it with scraps of batting. I will probably do that if I donate to someone on this side of the ocean. If I give it to someone in the USA, I’ll probably just buy a pillow form.
I realized only after trimming that I should have quilted it first and then trimmed it. Sometimes my head isn’t on straight! That’s kind of how it was with this whole pillow! I wished I had made the center a square - but I didn’t have 49 squares to make a 7x7 layout- though just now I remembered I had set aside a few strips for binding - I could have cut off 2.5” from one of them. Sigh. (It’s a 6x8 layout - so 48 squares.)
Anyway…it’s going to be given away, I realize - hopefully they will like it. I guess only you all know what I wish I had done, huh? I certainly won’t mention it when I give them the quilt and the pillow! Whoever that is!
I decided to quilt it with swirls. I haven’t quilted the quilt top yet, but will do it similarly when I do get to it!
Oh, and an amazing thing happened to me when I sat down at the machine to quilt it. Seriously. You aren’t going to believe it!
My heart skipped a beat! (Well, probably not literally) Yes, I got actually excited about doing the quilting on this little thing. Now, admittedly, quilting a pillow top that starts out 19”x19” is nothing compared to a queen size quilt. BUT, it actually is a first. I don’t remember feeling that before when it came time to quilt. Ever. on ANYTHING.
Maybe I will actually be a “quilter” someday! Someday.
Hopefully!
Most of you realize that the quilting part of this process has been my nemesis. I’ve really done it because without it, we wouldn’t have quilts. Uncertainty, insecurities, machine issues, etc.
All of them have gone into making me dread the quilting part.
I decided not to topstitch the finished edges of the pillow - maybe I will later. At this point, I think that top stitching will make it more obvious that I don’t have a perfectly even amount of green on the narrow sides of the red stripe.
And because it is to go with the quilt, having the back show doesn’t seem all the bad to me since I used the same fabric!
I have enough left - maybe I should just go ahead and make up a couple of pillowcases to match as well!
We’ll see.
