Cultural - so what's our October like?
That’s a great question!
I remember when we first came to Poland, I would look at magazines where they talked about fall and how beautiful it was for children play in the leaves and I would feel envious! We originally landed in Poland October 4. We had left FL where it was 80+F and landed in Warsaw in 1994 where it was 45F. What a shock to my system!
It had seemed to me that we had no beautiful fall weather - that we went from nice summer weather (in the 70’s) to the 40’s and 50’s - where it was a bit too chilly to just be outside. It had seemed like we just skipped the 60’s (F). In fact, the first few years, I remember specifically that the weather in September was nice for one week - until about the 7th or 10th of the month. Then, bam - it was as if the switch was turned and the summer like weather was gone and it was cool. We even had frosts in September at times - I know because I have had a garden for years.
However, things have changed here in the last few years. Now it is staying warmer longer and longer. Now maybe part of the whole thing may be that I’ve gotten used to cooler weather after being here for 25+ years.
LOL
But not only. I’m sure that it’s not true.
The weather this week has turned rainy and chilly. The last few days we’ve had to have a fire—the temps dropped 8 degrees C from one day to the next. As I write this, it is 47F and rainy. Not nice to be out playing in the leaves. The next few days are going to be 52F, 50F, 50F, 45F, 47F, 49F and 47F as highs. The lows are predicted to be in the low 40’s or upper 30’sF until next Tuesday when we are slated for a frost.
This year we have had several pretty nice days in early October - and late September —so we did get some of those beautiful “could play in the leaves if there had been leaves but it’s too early” days that you see in magazines. Usually in November it’s too cold to “play in the leaves”.
It now gets dark around 5:30 ish and when it is overcast and rainy, it feels like dusk much earlier. Today at dinner (we eat at 1 pm), my husband I discussed that it felt like about 4 pm if you just looked outside. That’s because we’ve had rain all day.
I absolutely won’t complain about the rain, though - we had weeks where we didn’t have any and we needed it!
I did take this picture the other day - and you can see that we do have SOME leaves on the ground, but by far, most of the leaves are still on the trees.
We will change time this year - possibly for the last time - as Poland, like all of Europe, is going to be going off of daylight savings time.
But what does all this mean to me?
It means that I am seriously ok with all this quilting. This is where I am - at the moment. These are quilted - not yet bound, washed, photographed, etc. But they are quilted. That feels pretty good! Once I get about 20 or so done, I’ll start binding as I like to choose two or three that are similar so that I can bind them with the same fabric.
In the meantime, I keep sandwiching 3, quilting 2 every day. It’s a marathon for me, and not a sprint. I’m going to do 120 or possibly more, this year.
And there you are - our wonderful October weather! It’s a big part of why I enjoy quilting in the cooler parts of the year!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
And don’t forget, if you need some fabric - be sure to check out the website here.
Here is one of the beautiful fall panels that we have for sale! It’s by Northcott. You can get it by clicking the link.
