"Sliding Stars"
Wow…Did this one change or what?
Sometimes quilts turn out not quite as well as you had hoped. Sometimes they turn out exactly like you thought they would and then sometimes…well, they exceed expectations.
This one is the latter.
When I saw how the top was lying on the floor of my living room, I was less than satisfied with how it looked. I knew that the background — the off white that I had used for this was a second hand fabric and I had thought it was all cotton. However, the fabric was “acting like poly/cotton”. Take a look:
But all signs of that humping and lumping are gone! Now I did choose to do some heavy quilting on it because of the situation I saw with the top. I was not happy with how the fabrics were working together.
My one way to try to get rid of it was just to quilt and quilt it all. I figured with a lot of swirls and curls…well, they tend to hide problems like that.
BUT, they did it better even than I thought they would! I am not sure why I keep doing these - one of my goals this year is to get better with feathers. Yes…feathers! I do like them but even though I’ve done them a few times, do not feel really confident with them.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m a slow learner when it comes to this artsy part of quilting - the quilting itself! But every single quilt I do this on, I like better than when the quilt started. So, it’s worth it. It’s slow…but if it creates this magic, then I’m fine with it.
However…as a finished quilt - I love it! I went out and got some early morning photos of this quilt a few days ago.
You can tell it isn’t the typical of the size of quilts i normally make. However, it is considerably bigger than the geometrics series I made earlier this year. So…I guess it’s a happy medium. It’s a nice twin sized quilt.
The 2.5” strips roll I was using to make those ribbon stars only had 5 different fabrics in it.
Yes, it was a “no name” roll - one that we acquired years ago when I bought a lady’s stash back in 2015.
However, I wanted to sort of get my feet wet with trying to use up one of these. (Since then I’ve actually opened up another one - that magic moment!)
I’d like to make a couple more quilts this calendar year using them. I don’t have a ton of them - but the ones I do have - I’ve not hardly touched. I want to change that.
And while each of these blocks is not “new to me” - I haven’t seen them put together like this.
If you get the pattern here - you will see that it is really quite an easy quilt top to make. The hardest thing might be coming up with the pieces of green big enough to make a 12.5” square.
While I used all the same green, a person could easily mix and match greens to make it more scrappy. My particular goal this time was using up the 2.5” strips pack
And as usual - the quilt roll:
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
The pattern is now on the free patterns page!
I’m feeling pretty discombobulated, because I just got word that another hospital wants some fun masks! So…now I’m adding that to the other things I’m trying to do! I’m a mess right now! It’s a good thing I can put two words together that make sense!
And thank you, Ruth, for the help with the name! I thought your description of the quilt looking like the stars are sliding was a good description!
Thanks, everyone, for all your help!
