UP Greens #22 - "Center Square"

This is number 22 finished top in my Upcycled Greens series!

This is super easy. I got the idea for doing this one because I have in my living room one similar that I made out of my dad’s shirts - and I still like it. It works fine for such a disjointed collection of fabrics.

Center Square - made out of my dad’s shirts

I did decide to use greens and added pinks in with the greens - to help soften those boxed square corners. Plus a lot of the so called “greens” I had have pink flowers in them - so I went ahead and played that up and introduced several shades of pink along with the greens.

This one ended up being 97”x107” - so a really nice and big quilt. The blocks of boxes are 10”x10” finished in the quilt. In truth, I had at first planned to not put a border on this one and just make it without a border.

But, I really wasn’t happy with the plan. The one I made out of my dad’s shirts has a piano key border. I thought without a border it was just “too abrupt”. So, I tried to soften it a bit with a border - though a simple 3-part border.

Here is a close up of the block.

Here’s another view. I used a lot of different greens in this one - from plaids to various florals. That darker green is actually one with a Christmas motif in it. but that’s about what I’ve got left in dark and I really wanted dark as part of the 3 part border.

I do want to put the quilt pattern that I wrote for Center Square on the site. I’ll get that done right away.

Just to remind you of where I stand in this series. Here is the series so far. I have 3 more in the works at the moment.

Once you notice me using only 1.5” strips or only small squares - you will know I’m coming to the end. I am at the point in my creating of this series, that I have to actually look at what I have left and then decide whether I can actually make the quilt I have in mind. But don’t worry - what doesn’t work for only greens - surely will work as a general “scrappy quilt”, so it’s not wasted time if I plan something I can’t make with these.. As my selection of fabrics diminishes, I will no doubt be using other colors a bit more. I still do like the green/white look.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on my quilting/sewing journey!
