"Mosaic" - using 3"x5.5" bricks
I’ve wanted to make the next two sizes UP from the largest Mosaic I’ve made already for some time.
I decided “Now is the time” and I got busy on the first one! I already had the bricks cut from my recent cutting frenzy. In fact, like usual, I way overcut my bricks. Not sure what I’ll do with these leftover bricks. For now, I’ll make them all neat and maybe put them in a baggie and put them on a shelf. However, I could just cut them in half and they become 1.5” strips x 5".5”. Hmmm. Maybe that’s a better option.
When I began to make this one, I realized that it really shouldn’t take too long.
I debated - and realized it only would take 3 - x’s across - and I thought maybe 3 x’s down would give me a queen size quilt. I had misgivings about the length but wanted it to be okay so that is what I aimed for.
So I made it.
But I wasn’t happy with the length of it. The width was fine - it was 90”. The length was only about 92” and I wanted it longer than that, so I added a half an “x”. I thought adding the other 6 rows would make it “too long”.
I had the top at the original size at about 7:30 pm. After I decided that I would add to it and “YES, Today”, I went back to my sewing machine and made the next 6 rows - making up a half an “x”. I added them to the top I had finished by 9 pm.
It is the same layout as I’ve used before - making this in rows. I really didn’t need to have all that many rows — especially in contrast to the small one I recently finished.
I’m not sure what to say about this except that I spent the day today doing this one - after having started it the afternoon before.
I put together ALL the strips first and clipped them in order using those really nice strong clips we have in our quilt world.
This afternoon/evening I sewed them together.
This is the layout I used. I have it printed out and posted on the wall in front of my sewing machine. With the other sizes, I still used this layout or one similar, but adjusted it for the size I wanted. I have even printed it out two times and cut and pasted the pieces of paper together to get the width I wanted to make.
Silly?
Maybe, but it works for me.
Let me show you what I’ve done - and let you see them side by side. This is now the fourth size of this design I’ve made! Each one is nice!
I only plan on doing one more size “up” - using 3.5”x6.5” bricks.
And that’s it. I worked on this all day except for making a quick trip outside, and spending some time talking on the phone to a friend. It’s COLD outside - so staying in is much better!

Here’s one of the beauties we have!
