"Water Ways" top finished

This quilt top was made for my friend, Ewa and her husband. I had brought back some fabrics from FL last time I went, in hopes of making them a quilt with a sailboat theme. After our Christmas extravaganza, where Ewa and Robert came at 6 AM to help us pack (that’s quite an offer, if you think about it!), I knew I really wanted to make “it” now. Obviously I already knew that Robert loves sailing, and apparently so does Ewa.

I thought making them a sailing quilt would be special.

And so I did.

I talked about it with Ewa first to make sure she would actually like such a quilt (she did!) and she told me that she would like it to be gray since that is what they have in their bedroom. So, I used gray as the sashings - both light and dark gray since I didn’t really know what kind of gray and didn’t want to ask any more questions.

I had showed her my fabrics and we pulled out a few that didn’t seem to work with gray. After that, she said, “Surprise me!”

This is what I made:

I used some cat fabric in some of the sails, since Ewa loves cats and works with a cat rescue group. I also put some of the Polish fabric in the flags from the sails. But other than that, I was just looking for bright fabrics that would show up well against whatever I chose for the sky.

I had wanted to feature both the sailing fabrics I had and the sailing blocks which were pieced. I knew that Ewa likes small piecing, but I really wanted to feature the fabrics themselves. This was my compromise!

Then, I made the same sashing and 9 patch borders I’ve made before on other quilts. I wanted to use those little 1” 9 patches (3” squares) because I knew Ewa would love the tiny.

I used the leftover/cut off pieces from the snowball blocks for one of the outer borders. I thought Ewa would appreciate that since she likes to use up other people’s “waste” and is big into recycling. (That’s how we met—I offered leftover batting to the group and she responded.)

I will write up the pattern and will have it ready to go by the time I show you the final finished quilt. Hopefully that will be soon!

And that’s it for today from snowy Jozefow, Poland!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Stay safe!
