Shopping for supplies!
I had run out of my poly batting so I went to my local wholesale shop a couple of weeks ago and asked them to get me some more batting! (I will be using a lot this year if I truly do finish up 52+ big ones for charity plus small ones!)
They called me yesterday telling me that the batting was in. I had thought they’d go get it last week, but apparently didn’t. It’s okay. I didn’t run out of things to do! However, I did want to start sandwiching a few more of those big charity quilts before I get going with quilting them. The weeks are flying by!
Did I mention?
I really dislike sandwiching. It’s really the only part of this whole quilting process that I don’t like. I can think of positives about each of the other steps in this process, but I have a hard time thinking of the pluses of sandwiching!
I went just after lunch/dinner today and there was a large roll of batting just standing there - and it looked someone had taken some! Yikes, I thought…was I too late by waiting a day. They had called yesterday afternoon but I was busy and didn’t want to run over there1
I asked about the batting and the worker/owner asked if I could buy 40 meters instead of 50 as they had had a lady come and buy 10 meters. I said, “Sure, but can I go ahead and also buy a 50 meter roll if you have it as well?” Well, most stores aren’t going to say no to that!
“Yes, of course!” She said.
She had brought 2 rolls home with her from her supplier! So, we loaded it all into the van and I brought it home. For those of you who are new here - my wholesale place is about 1/2 mile (if that much) from my house! You have no idea how blessed I feel to have it that close!
A few other things jumped into my bag of goodies to buy while I was there.
I bought:
a can of spray starch from Germany - 400 ml - it was 10 zl/$2.58
I’ve been finding spray starch very useful when working with second hand items - far more than I have ever used it with new fabrics. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever used it with new fabric. However, some of these second hand fabrics are less than ideal or are thinner or more squirrelly than what I’m used to working with. The starch helps incredibly.
2 rolls of polka dot ribbon. I’ve got to figure out a way to use it for my granddaughters who love purple and pink!
a roll of wider ribbon with the words “love” on it. No special reason - just because I like it and wanted to get it while they had it.
some small spools of thread in colors I could see myself using for quilting
a yellow magnetic pin cushion for the main floor of the house. I have two in my sewing room - a red one by my Janome 8900 which I use for quilting and walking foot work, and a blue one by the Juki which I use for piecing. I’ve often wanted one for the main floor where I sandwich and sometimes find pins. I thought a yellow one was a fitting addition to my collection!
a magic roller for getting lint off clothing. Works great for getting threads off tops as well. This type appears like it will be easier to use than the other kind I have which is cheaper but the paper rolls sometimes come off in multiples at a time.
I brought it all home and admired it.
Oh, and I had had a box of that batting that I ordered from an auction dealer for our local auction site (like Ebay/Amazon combined).
I brought it into the house. I think it is 6 meters if I remember right, so hopefully enough for 2 queen size quilts in this box. I had left it in the van for a while. I figured I had empty hands so I could bring it in with me this time.
And there you are. I’m in the midst of doing some quilting, so I’m eager to get back to it.
Oh…do you use starch in your quilting or really, for anything? Please let me know down in the comments!
Thanks for coming along with me on my journey!
