Cultural: Price check - Groceries, - name brand items - part 3

I went to a grocery store called Spar which is the closest thing we have to a store in the states like Publix or WinnDixie or Kroger.

So here goes. I went looking for foods that were name brands familiar to people in the states.

Cheetos - Ketchup flavor - 85 grams (2.99 oz.) - $0.83

Lays chips - sour cream and onion - 140 grams (4.9 oz.) - $0.95

M&Ms - 150 grams (5.29 oz.) - $1.72

Lipton - yellow label black tea - 50 bags - $2.08

Bounty candy bar 57 gr (2.01 oz.) - $0.83

Mars candy bar 70 gr (2.47 oz.) - $0.83

Snickers candy bar 75 gr (2.65 oz.) - $0.79

Coca cola zero - 12 oz. can - $1.10 per can

Pampers - Sleep and Play - Mid size 3 - 58 diapers - $10.19

Oreo - Double stuff cream - 12 cookies - $1.20

Oreo - regular - 16 cookies- $1.25

HIT chocolate cream cookies - 220 grams - $1.14

Heinz - garlic sauce - like ranch dressing - 400 grams (14 oz.) - $1.79

Cini Minis (Cinnamon Toast Crunch) - 500 grams (17.6 oz.) - $2.29

Lea Perrins Worcestershire Sauce - 290 ml (9.8 fl oz.) - $3.33

Kasia Margarine (I couldn’t find a name brand that was from the states - so just a name brand margarine - as in sticks) - 2 sticks (1/2 lb.) - this block is 8.8 oz. - $1.25 - so $2.50/lb. (just under that, actually)

Philadelphia cream cheese - 4 oz - $1.37

Heinz ketchup 570 grams (20 oz.) - $2.02

Coca Cola zero - 2 liters - $2.08

Pepsi Max - 1.5 liters - $1.56

HP sauce for grilling (bbq sauce) 465 grams (16.4 oz.) - $2.70

Hellmann’s mayonnaise - 405 grams (14.3 oz.) - $1.77

Spar ground beef - 14.99 PLN for 500 grams - $3.12 for the package or $2.83/lb.

Coca Cola zero - 3.49 PLN each (I bought 6 to make an equivalent 6 pack) - $0.73/can or $4.38 for a 6 pack.

This whole order totaled 249.50 Polish zloty or $51.90.

There you are - those are name brand items I could find locally - with the exception of ground beef and the margarine.

Prices have risen dramatically but SO has the dollar. Our dollar is considerably stronger than just 6 months ago. That means, that we get MORE of those Polish zlotys for the dollar than we did in December, 2021. So that is good for us - and very good for those of you who have given money for us to buy food for Ukraine.

Some things have doubled in price since the war started (in PLN) - but the exchange rate varies. Anything over 4 PLN to $1 is good, by my way of thinking and right now it is 4.8 PLN to a dollar - at least it was this morning. Next week it might be 4.3, which would then make things more expensive for us. The exchange rate is totally beyond our control.

When I do shopping for Ukraine, rarely do I buy these brands - as i usually buy a store or house brand as you pay more for name brands, obviously. I also buy at the deep discount places or the wholesale place.

Anyway, I hope this was interesting for you. I will do at least one more with random things we do buy that are different prices - which you might find interesting from a gallon of gasoline/diesel to a ream of white printer paper. But not at the moment. That will take a bit more time and I’ll have to run down things.

If you are interested in anything in particular, I can try to find out the price - if you will put in the comments the thing you are interested in.

Oh, and my sis wanted me to point out that in Poland the minimum wage is $655 for a full time job. So, these prices are quite a hit for someone making so little.

Once again - thanks so much for coming along on this journey with me! Have a great day wherever you are reading!
