9 Patch/Streak of Sunshine Combo

It’s time to show you what I did in the last couple of days.

I decided to go simple and just put black on the border as I drew it up. For a brief few moments i was delusional and thought about making a complicated border. However, i decided to stay with the theme of ‘simple’ and let myself get this top finished.

So here it it.

I made up 9 patches in various numbers, depending on how many squares of what I had - I needed 8 of four different colors and then 2 groups of 7 identical, 6 identical, 5, 4, 3, 2 and then 1. So, I worked with that in mind.

I did use a couple different black fabrics - but hopefully after it is all done and quilted, it will be less obvious.

This one isn’t that big - I think it is about 66”x90” or so. Here’s the layout.

For the outer border, I just used a 2.5” strip. That means the top is made entirely of 2.5” strips or squares.

While I don’t mind this top, I’m a little ‘meh’ about it - but it’s fine. Wait - that’s too indifferent. In fact, I do like it.

However, I had made too many blocks that I ended up not using in this top.

So, I worked on another layout. This is what I will do with the leftover blocks. I need 40 with black and 40 with the white. I already had 39 blocks with black! So, I only need to make one more of those.

But I already have 2.5” squares cut up in these colors so I think I can whip out 41 more 9 patches pretty quickly using white This is what I want to do with this second one.

As you can see with this one - the difference in these two designs is that the bottom one has a sashing strip that is actually a rail fence with a white/green-blue-purple/black layout which is flipped to butt up next to the white or black used in the 9 patch of that block. Then I used black cornerstones.

I may play around with this a bit more. But I like it. For the rest of these blocks, I will use strips from my 2.5” bags of already cut up strips.

I then worked on this one - which I like even more. Here it is. But I think I will go ahead and make the one shown above.

So there you go. I’m glad that I was able to get into my sewing room again!

Have a great day wherever you are reading!
