Been Working on A New Project

I got inspired by this quilt. Let me show you. It came through as a donation for Ukraine.

I have always like the 9 patch block - it’s so simple, but can be made into things like Irish Chain, a simple scrappy quilt, etc. I’ve made a fair few in my quilting life so far!

When I saw this quilt, I put it to the side, just so I could look at it a little more. I wanted to see why I liked it so much.

Let me tell you why.

The colors. I like the black as opposed to white which is what I usually use. I also like the blenders the person chose. Subtle. Effective.

The quilting - the person wasn’t afraid to use COLOR in the quilting. So many times I see quilters on line and they just want the quilting to disappear into the quilt where you can’t really see it. This person wasn’t afraid to show it off. It is lovely.

If you are the quilter who made this wonderful quilt with the totally fun quilting, thank you for this! I’ll give you all the credit if you let me know who you are!

And now I’m making one. I wanted to use my 2.5” strips so I laid it out as shown - as I do want mine bigger than the inspiration quilt.

This is the layout - using 2.5” strips everywhere - meaning the 9 patches are 6” finished.

So, I’m making up 9 patches and going to make them into this look with the colors going sideways down the quilt.

Obviously it might not look just like this as I’ll decide on the final layout after I make the 9 patches with the fabrics I have. I’m trying to stick to either blenders or a color/white - with the white being sort of subtle.

I’m only going to use blues, greens and purples in mine. I’m using what I can find easily - in these colorways. Unfortunately for you I don’t yet have a top to show you but I’m getting much closer. My sewing room gets hot on very warm summer days - so I don’t have a lot of desire to be in there when it’s like a sauna outside.

I will show you a few pics of the blocks I’m making. I’ll try to get in my sewing room and press first thing in the morning so I can finish up those 9 patch blocks. (I hate to press in the middle of the day when it’s already hot - and neither does my husband as this is where our bedroom is and his office.)

In these photos, the black looks like dark brown, but it’s not. It’s really black.

This one has been evolving a bit. I did make some 9 patches that I’ve decided not to use in this quilt - which means I will inevitably make another one with black as the alternate color - using those other blocks. :)

I also got sidetracked with this one - as I have the centers all done for a DIFFERENT quilt that I started making - but like this Family Circus cartoon, I’m taking a long route to get that one done! I know I’m not the only quilter who gets sidetracked on other projects, though. :) I’m sure I’m not!

The ONLY reason that this one isn’t finished yet is that I need to get in there and finish making those 9 patches. :) It’s just that simple. Once I get the blocks finished, I’ll enjoy seeing it come to completion. I’m not making this one huge as I don’t want to have to make a lot of the same color 9 patches which is would I would need to do if I made this one queen sized.

I could, in theory, anyway, make a row with say, purples and use a variety of all purples, and blues - using say all lights - but I want to make the diagonal rows out of the same fabrics, like my inspiration quilt shown above.

And there you are! This is what I’m doing at the moment!

Have a great day! Thanks so much for coming along with me!
