Dec. 2022 Strips Cutting Report

December proved to be quite a challenge when it came to cutting up scraps. I’m not sure why except that I just did other things.

But here are the totals that I did trim. They are pitiful, but I did a tiny bit.

2.5” - 0.55 lbs.

2” - 0.55 lbs.

1.5” - 0.22 lbs.

As you can tell, this was a tiny bit. I just didn’t seem to expend much energy on this - but it wasn’t because I just sat around eating bonbons. Maybe it was the darkness - but I just didn’t feel like standing at the table and cutting in the evenings, which is what I’ve done in the past to get my totals up.

I will start with renewed energy in January, as I have plenty to trim!

This makes my totals for 2022 look like this.

And this puts my totals since I started keeping track these amounts!

This last chart represents a lot of fabric.

Let’s just take a look at the 2.5” strips alone. 343 lbs. Just round that off to about a lb. per Jelly Roll or 2.5” strips. That’s 343 Jelly Rolls!

That’s a lot of fabric!

That’s a LOT of money!

I am not asking my sis to find a photo of 343 JRs to put all together in a photo as I doubt she has that many in the store! But, if they were only $25 per roll, because they are scraps, that would be a value of $8575! Ok. Maybe that’s too much. They are scraps -not all beautifully coordinated. So, let’s go back down to that measly $10 I’ve used before. Even that would be $3430 value for all those scraps. Just think about it! And that’s ONLY the 2.5” strips.

I only say that because while I think most of my readers actually Do use scraps and small pieces while quilting, I want to encourage you to at least look at your scraps through the eyes that they can be valuable and useful. I know some people consider the fabric to have done its job once the current project is done. And that is fine - it’s your life and your money, but I would like to encourage you to at least ask a friend if they would like to have your scraps if you don’t want them. That would be good for your space, good for your friend’s pocketbook and good for the earth - by not adding any perfectly good fabric to landfills- though at least cotton will decompose given enough time!

I usually stay away from those kinds of topics, but I do think that being frugal with your fabric and using it all up is good in so many ways! I believe we are to be good stewards of the earth - as God put Adam in the Garden of Eden to take care of it (Genesis 2:15), I do think that we should take care of our earth as best as we can.

Anyway, I digress. This post is just to keep reminding myself to cut up those leftover pieces and make them usable for future quilts. Do what works for you! This isn’t a right/wrong issue - it’s an issue of trying to keep myself motivated to stay on top of all those scraps!

I’m probably not going to do a big massive end of year summary on all the quilts I’ve done as I don’t feel like I’ve done that many this year. So…I will just put it behind me and push on towards 2023. Maybe it will be a better year for me. Due to our circumstances, I’ve had to focus on other things in 2022.

So there you are. Soon it will be 2023. I hope it’s a good one for you.

Stay safe and thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
