"Granny Square Folk" top finished

I decided that I just wanted to do some brights tops or some pastels. I tend to go in cycles, I guess. In the fall I tend to make autumn colored quilt tops, but maybe it has to do with not making tops through the summer - but my mind said, “Enough’s enough - make something in colors you love”.

So I started on some tops in colors that I love.

Here is the first of those ‘brights/pastels’ quilt tops I’ve finished lately.

Here is the layout - This one uses 2.5” squares - these strips were taken from my 2.5” strips bags! The gray alternate flowers I did cut from yardage.

The individual block looks like this - and I had such fun making them.

I went through a bag or two of my 2.5” strips and pulled out the colors I wanted in this. I chose pinks, blues, lighter greens, and yellows - and there wasn’t much orange - and I was trying for mostly colors - with almost no white backgrounds.

My husband said that the picture and the top didn’t look alike this time.

Hmm.

Then he told me it’s because my gray in the little cornerstones and corners is a bit darker in real life than in the drawing. Well, I said, it is hard to get an exact match when I’m sitting at the computer and putting in colors and not down at my fabric stash. I could change it, but I didn’t bother.

I’m calling it Granny Square Folk because the little gray flowers look like a folk design often used by groups in this part of the world.

Here you can see what it looked like as I was laying it out - and what I told Mike it would look like when finished. The paper is towards the front of the photo in the center.

When I was laying out the design on the floor, I used this print out of the design to help me.

I told him I thought it looked very much like the photo. :)

Here’s a bit more of a close up.

And from the side.

When I drew it up, I wanted it to be a dark navy blue background. However…one problem—I didn’t have enough of any navy that was dark. In fact, when I went into the room and found this charcoal colored duvet cover and two pillowcases, I chose the group immediately. In the light in the room I wasn’t absolutely sure what color it was - but I saw that it was dark - very dark - but not black. So I was happy enough with it.

OH - I am currently OUT of solid black and solid white - new fabrics.

A lady here in Poland gave me a lot of second-hand whites, so I do have some of those but my bolts of both (new) colors are gone. I had wanted to get some more - but wanted to wait - like so many other things I wanted to wait to do until I had my new residency card.

I’m now planning another trip for fabric to the manufacturer, Kejt. I just finished off 5 big bolts today as I prepared backings for the next 20 charity quilts and evaluated what I need in colors/styles. Of all the fabrics I bought back in August, 2021, I’ve used up a good bit of it. That was this load.

I do have some of these still - but as I begin to make these charity quilts - I will be going through these remaining bolts like lightning. And I’m out of the children’s prints except for one - a town one. I need more animal prints - because both boys and girls like them so I’ve spent some time in front of the computer looking at what they have and reminding myself what I need.

I want some woodland prints, more tiger, puppy or dog/cat prints if I can find them with some brown/gold undertones as well as those typical bold children’s colors- reds, blues, yellows, oranges, etc.

Anyway, if and when that happens, I’ll share with you my shopping trip here in Poland. I find it great fun to go on a GIANT fabric haul. I guess I’m related to my sis, huh? The difference here is these bolts are 50 METERS each, so I really can’t buy a whole bunch of them - as this was a very big load (shown above).

Anyway - I am happy with the top - hope you like it.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
