Weekly Review of Ukraine Efforts - end of September

This week we did several things. Let’s review.

Monday -

We continued to take quilts to the church to get them out of my basement long-arm room.
We put these quilts in the garage.

Also on Monday I went with Lena and Rachel shopping to get chemical supplies and hygiene products. We went to a couple of stores and then put the items back into the garage, waiting for the next load which is scheduled for Thursday.

We picked up dry shampoo, floor cleaning supplies, dish detergent, Duct tape, candles, gloves, trash bags, etc.

I got a lot of adult diapers that I had ordered. I had also ordered bed covers - to protect the beds. This particular group helps a lot of disabled people. We filled up both the back of the truck and the van.

This group also asked for flashlights and other things. Here are photos. The white powder is baking soda. I bought 40 kg of it. I think they are using it for cleaning.

They also needed Mike to bring them two diesel generators (they were going to repay Mike for them).

Tuesday -

We took our loads of adult diapers and bed covers to the garage at church - we were going to load up on Wed. afternoon. At church we opened the boxes we had received at the house - unpacked them. Here are photos.

Upon going home after this, I arrived to a lot more things which had arrived. These needed to get put into the van for the next day. I was tired and didn’t want to go back to the church just then. These are rolls of 20 meters of oilcloth which is vinyl tablecloth materials. They wanted this to cover up windows which had been broken out due to the bombings.

I then put all of this stuff into the back of the van.

Those rolls were heavy!

Wednesday -

We loaded the trailer for Thursday’s trip. I had to go to the wholesale place ahead of time and pay for the food and then they delivered it to the church and helped us load it into the trailer. While we were waiting on that, we started loading up the trailer with these oilcloth rolls and a few other things. I bought quite a few different designs, but this butterfly design was by far my favorite due to the prettiness of the design. I hope they get to have this side facing into the room.

Then the truck arrived and we proceeded to load up the trailer. Lena, Rachel, Natalia, Mike and I were doing the loading - plus the guy in from the wholesale place - Pawel.

This particular group didn’t want any quilt sets, so they didn’t get any. We were hoping to not send them too much because the man had only one van to meet Mike - and Mike said it was COMPLETELY filled up. So I’m glad we didn’t get anymore.

The hard working crew.

Girl-Power! (plus Mike and Pawel from the wholesale place)

The week before I had bought a second-hand refrigerator for a Ukrainian family here in our area as theirs had quit. Actually it was not technically second-hand but it was one that was steeply reduced in price because it was a display model - with a few dings in the side of it. They got it on Wednesday and the family was VERY grateful.

Here is what they received - They were thrilled - even though I know they don’t look it. That’s how it is over here - often people don’t smile much.

Friday

I was able to give 12 charity quilts to a lady who wanted them for Ukrainian refugees. However, since she wanted all large ones, I opted to give her charity quilts which are singles - and not the whole bundle packs. Since I had them, I also gave her 12 pillows and 12 pillowcases to go with them. I did not have 12 more blankets, however.

Saturday

I took another load of quilts to the church and Rachel helped me unload them. Now the room in the church building looks like this. As of this writing I have about two more loads left in the basement and then I will have moved them OUT.

Now the room at church is looking full and my basement room is looking empty! (YEAH!)

It may only be one more load because a friend of mine needs 35 to go to refugees in the south of Poland who are desperately poor. I am inclined to give them to her.

And there you go - hopefully by the middle of November all of these quilt sets will be moved out to their new homes. That’s my goal. I believe we can meet it just fine. I know that those of you who donated them wanted them to help people ASAP.

Thanks again for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading.
