"Test Pattern #49 Revised" - part 1
Well, I’ve been putting this off long enough. Once again, for some reason I haven’t wanted to do this revision - and yet, I long to have it done already.
So I told myself to start taking bites of the elephant already!
So I did. I figuratively kicked myself in the seat and bit the bullet. How’s that for enough idioms within a few sentences?
This week I had decided that I would make the necessary 9 patches that are the regular ones. And that’s all.
I figure if I can take those figurative forkfuls of this project every week, I will eventually get it done. Just sitting and thinking that I wish I had it done already isn’t doing anything or getting me anywhere except feeling bad that it’s not done.
So, here goes.
For starters, I’m easing into the project with a simple 9 patch.
I began with the main block -
I needed 113 of these regular 9 patches for this layout.
So I made them.
Here is the process. I sewed together strips pulled from my 2” strips bags - both dark/mediums and either white, cream or a sort of low volume type. I used all three in this.
Then I made the strips, pressed them, trimmed off 2” strips until I had 226 of the dark/light/dark segments and 113 of the light/dark/light segments.
Then I made the 9 patches.
Then I pressed.
And that is where I am. I did find a nice bag to put it all in along with the design printed out on a piece of paper. This top has a lot of piecing involved and I do not want to lose these segments as I make them!
I’ve already decided that for next week I’ll try to get the 9 patches that require a light corner. I only need 72 of those.
If you are new to this - and don’t necessarily remember what I’m talking about here - well, I wanted to remake this quilt top
into this one.
It’s number 49 in my 2” series.
So each week from now until it is actually finished I will take a small step and make it. If the weeks looks crazy busy, it might only be cutting some plain blocks (like those gray ones), but hopefully I can always do more than that! I guess I’m trying to sneak this quilt top into my other things I’m trying to get done…without really “feeling the burden” of such a complicated top. I suppose I’m doing that to myself because it is a ‘remake’.
If you want to come along with me - I am working mostly with 2” strips - but will need to use smaller pieces - and a few larger ones later on.
Anyway - this first week - I made 113 9 patches with the darks in the corners using 2” strips.
For the second week - I’ll make 72 9 patches with lights in one corner only. Like this: I’m also using 2” strips and squares. I will probably just go ahead and use strips even for the light corner - that way I can use two different ones if I want to. I will use the same light gray that I will use elsewhere in the top for the two small squares indicated. For those I will need to cut some 2” strips.
So I feel kind of dumb sharing such a small thing with you about this top. But I am, at the same time, encouraged to get going on this remake.
Thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading!
