Personal note - Heat wave and more

This blog post is going to be short and sweet.

My husband is going on a trip - to Central Asia - where he will be for about 12 days. He is doing some speaking and teaching.

These are some of the same people I made that wedding quilt for a while ago now. Remember that one?

Would anyone like me to write up this pattern? I’ve never done it because I’m not sure it is needed or even wanted.

I hardly had any time at all to make it - so I made this simple medallion quilt.

As a result of his trip, I’ve been trying to make sure he has what he needs (laundry, reminding him about things he needs to do and learning about things I need to do in his absence) and is ready to go.

I took him to the airport Thursday.

He used to travel several times a year to teach in Ukraine. Since COVID, that has not happened, though he was gone for an extended period last year when he drove into Ukraine to deliver aid - and also this year when he drove over. But normally he was going multiple times a year. So, it is strange to think of his being away.

Anyway - we are going to be facing a heat wave while he is gone.

Before you feel too sorry for us - let me show you our heat wave. It’s just that in our area, people generally don’t have air conditioning. However, we’ve found that if we can get the windows open and air flow through in the early morning hours we can cool off the house and it stays cool unless we have a lot of traffic in and out.

Here is the forecast in F. Below it is in C.

As long as it gets this cool at night, we can usually cool off the house so it stays comfortable during the day. When it gets to almost 65F at night, then it doesn’t work so well.

Forecast in C

What makes me very happy about the hot weather is that it is perfect for my plants - all my plants, except for the peas, love the heat. So, they are growing. I just have to make sure they have water and I will need to add fertilizer.

Since I set up almost all the pumpkins and zucchini with soaker hoses (I have two more areas that don’t have them and I should rectify that situation), it is working out quite well. I can just go turn on the water during the way and know that they are able to grow, grow, grow!

I’m not giving my garden report til the middle of July, but let me show you one -

This is an interesting looking pumpkin. Can’t wait to see what it really looks like as it matures.

I usually try to make some concrete goals while he is gone - (as I know he does for himself while I’m gone). I’ve not done that at the point of this writing. It will probably be quilting related. I may try to get a certain number of charity quilts done. We’ll see. It all depends on my energy level. Maybe I won’t make any specific goals about quilting, either.

And that’s it.

Those of you who are praying folks, please pray for my husband’s safety. The country he is in is not particularly friendly to Christianity though it is not like Pakistan or Afghanistan!

Thank you very much!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
