Shadows

This beautiful scrap quilt is one of the ones I gave away recently. Did I not like it? Quite the contrary - I loved it!

I had these center 9 patches in my sewing room last year and I just decided to dress them up a bit to make this quilt.

In the end, I was able to give this quilt to a neighbor for her grown daughter. I hope she likes it.

A while ago one of you all mentioned putting the shadow on the blocks with a half square triangle (HST) on the corners to help it look even more dimensional than a shadow without the HST.

I really like it with these very large blocks.

The colors are deep and amazing and this one is one of the favorites of the ones I’ve finished lately.

I just quilted it with loops. Once again, I was more concerned with getting more caught up on my tops than doing super fancy quilting. And I’m glad I did. I can easily talk myself out of finishing things if I go for perfection. I think most of you realize that I really prefer the piecing than the quilting.

But I do love these colors together. I think I will always like them - all the cool colors like this one - the blues, greens, purples - to me they are just so pretty! I even threw cool pinks into the mix.

You can see that the center 9 patches which were put on point are made from a variety of scraps. I just worked with that color scheme.

I actually think these were leftover framed 9 patches from when I made this quilt a little while ago. Let me show you.

Like I often do, I made too many of the blocks. Then I did make a few more if I needed them in order to make this current top.

Even though both are shadowed quilts, they look quite different! Of course with this one, I put the blocks on point and added another square around them.

I used gray to quilt it with and the effect is definitely interesting. The batting is polyester and the overall effect is a bit poofy. That means it should be nice and warm.

I somehow love the look of a shadow. I remember the first time I saw a quilt with this look - it was one where the rectangles were all different sizes and I thought it was so clever.

It’s been a while ago now and I don’t know if it was particularly original back then, but I’ve certainly used a shadowed block over and over since I learned how they are made. Now I’ve added the HST to the corner of the shadows- it does make yet another, a bit more elegant look to the shadows.

This is one I really like. Maybe I’ll do it again with a completely different color scheme. I’ll think on it.
