"Vintage Chain Special"

I was able to get this one all FINISHED! Yeah!

It’s part of my 2.5” series of quilts but is similar to the one with the same name as in my 2” series. That one looks like this:

I completely redid it with black instead of purple and larger squares. I also made a special extra emphasis with some detail in one of the blocks. That’s why I added the word Special to the name.

Here it is -

I did look for deeply saturated colors and prints when I made it.

I did not use long strips of white for this one - everything in this top is made with 2.5” strips and strip pieced as much as possible. That means when you see the white squares, I did have two white pieces next to each other. It would be possible, of course, to use a 2.5”x4.5” strip instead, but I just opted to try it this way this time.

I tend to like the convenience of when it is time to nest things together - it works very well when all the strips are 2.5”.

There is so much color in this quilt! It is beautiful!

With black - the design shows up very well! Naturally! You could use any other strong color as the edge color to help define it - or not use one at all. It would just look a bit less dramatic if you did that.

As with all of my “chains” quilts, I love this one. I’ll give it a 9/10 simply because there is a lot to see, and does require 3 different blocks. You can use lots of interesting fabrics to make it a sort of memory quilt if you so wished.

I could make these over and over and not get bored with them. Well, I say that, but probably after 3 in a row, I’d be ready for a change.

But when you lay those blocks out and the chain forms into the overall pattern, it is just so fun! It’s silly, but my heart goes pitter patter when that happens. I just kind of look and have a little intake of breath. Let me show you what I mean - when I was laying it out on the floor - as a top. I realize the first blocks aren’t necessarily oriented correctly - I had to fix that with picture nr. 2.

This top uses no sashing or cornerstones nor is it on point. It goes together pretty quickly.

I think this one is a beauty. However, because I did use the 2.5” strips - it went together quickly. I only had to make 13 of one block and 6 of the other two blocks. They are large, however (18.5”).

Early morning sunshine was “helping me” with the photos.

The quilt roll:

I just used loops. There is already a lot of drama here - and this was sufficient.

I was thinking (wrongly) that all I was going to have to do to update the pattern was just change a couple of things around. LOL

That’s funny.

Here’s the pattern. I hope someone can use it. This quilt is beautiful and USES a LOT of 2.5” strips!

Oh, and I did let this one go. I told you - it seems a lot easier for me to let the ones made with 2.5” strips and squares rather than the 2”, though. It just is. It’s found a new home. I don’t remember who - but hopefully someone is loving it as much as I do.

Thank you so much for coming along with me on this journey!
