"Prairie Home" quilt update
This quilt is pretty intense.
The hardest and busiest part so far has been the inside of the log cabin blocks that are the whole bottom half of this quilt.
The house went together pretty quickly.
I still need to make the various animals, stars and trees found at the top of the quilt, but they seem like they will be relatively quick compared to the dense piecing of the lower part.
So I’m working on the lower part now. Plus, I have so many small pieces of Lori holt fabric that I’ve been able to use up a LOT of them in this quilt and that makes me very very happy!
I decided that I’ve had a problem with log cabin blocks - as I tend to make them smaller than they are supposed to be, so I am choosing this time to make my strips a bit wider than will be as finished blocks and will trim down at each round. This means that for once, my blocks will be the right size!!!
And yes, I’m loving how nice it is looking.
Instead of cutting 1.5” wide strips, I’m cutting them at 1.75”. I am sewing them on and then after I get a round sewn on, I am trimming.
On these blocks there are three rounds - making the blocks 10” finished in the quilt. I just finished my first round AFTER I finished the centers of all of them.
I felt very accomplished doing this. It was all quite a bit of work. I think especially since I’ve had some other important things to do this past week. But I finished that other thing so now I am free to focus once again on quilting.
And I am thrilled with how these blocks look. Trimming them down will totally be worth it. I only have 40 blocks to make, so it’s not as if I have to trim 100-200 blocks. That would be something to consider. I think it took me about 20 minute to do the first trimming as shown.
Making the star centers and then the first round - now this took a while! But here is my nice pile of blocks so far - they are 6.5” square at this point.
The center of these blocks is the star which is 4.5” finished.
Then, after I finished my first round, I trimmed to 6.5”. The next round will be 8.5”. Then 10.5” and I can stop. :)
Once I get the next round done (the 8.5” size), I will start feeling close to being done with these blocks. Once I get them done, I can start putting the top together - and get the other picture blocks done!
Just to show you what I’m working on! You can get your book here.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
