The Making of a Quilt Kit
The abracadabra of the fabric world is not available here at Quilted Twins.
We make most of our own everything. VERY few things do we purchase already ready to go. This includes MOST of our quilt kits.
Today I’d like to walk you through making the Ocean Blue Quilt Kit.
First you get your packages from either UPS or FedEx.
Boxes all look alike until opened. Once opened, you notice that there are beautiful blue fabrics in there that you’ve been waiting for!
I decided to walk you through making the Ocean Blues Quilt Kit(s) from first opening the boxes.
The first step after opening the boxes is to dig them out. Some are buried deep inside.
Gather them into a shopping cart. Many of you have been in the store and realize just how invaluable these shopping carts are to our ultimate success! Once you’ve found your fabric, you certainly don’t want to carry it through our maze of 13,000 bolts of fabric until you find the cutting table. No, you want to have hands free looking. So, we’ve provided shopping carts! Well, we use them, too! All day, every day, in the store!
Then I get dig out the pattern(s). I have to study them when it’s quiet, to be sure that we have all the needed fabrics! For this particular set of fabrics, I’m cutting Sea Worthy. Unfortunately, for you all reading this one, Sea Worthy Quilt Kit is already sold out, though we still have Deep Blue Sea.
Sea Worthy utilizes the beautiful large panel, which, by the way, we do still have! So, come and get that HERE. It’s available for just $13 for the panel. We also still have all the fabrics, which you can get HERE.
After studying the back of the pattern, I cut 12 sets of all of the fabrics needed. I had only 12 patterns, so that’s what I made.
Then, the fun began. I spread the items out on the table. First, starting with the large chunk of white (which I ruler folded, of course). Then I added the waves, which were by far, the most FUN thing to cut, simply because they are a super cool fabric!
Then I added a blue blender which was another Quilting Treasures fabric which we had in stock. The pattern simply said light blue. One was super light blue and the other just a regular light blue. I split the sets into 6 with the super light blue and the other 6 with the regular light blue. Both look amazing with the kits!
Then I piled on the ships, the octopi, in both light and dark.
I finished with putting the pattern on top and then bagging it into our ziptop bags.
But wait! There’s more.
Just one more MAJOR thing to do!
I have to stop working on that, and go to the computer, with the pattern in hand.
I have to figure out what to charge, and then make a label for the package!
Later on that night, I’ll put it up on the site and include it in my emails!
Well, I did that one and you have received it well.
(About 3 or 4 days after I made Sea Worthy, I pumped out Deep Blue Sea! That one is slightly less expensive because it’s slightly smaller!)
This is the next quilt kit I made featuring the Ocean Blues Block Panel called Deep Blue Sea. It can be purchased HERE.
After that, I put all the fabrics back into the trusty shopping cart, and take them DOWN from my amazing CHOP SHOP down to Cheryl at the back end of the store, where she then photographs the fabrics and gets them up onto the site.
Then, the leftover fabrics get put onto our SHOW SHELF, where they await our Monday and Friday YouTube and Facebook LIVE SHOW with Ken and Rachael! Then, and only then, can these fabrics be homed in the store! Right now these beauties are shelved right near the LORALIE shelf, between the oranges and the reds.. ONLY because that’s where we have space for them! NOT because it makes any logical sense at all!
So, if you think that we open boxes and out pops quilt kits – please think again!
It’s a process which we all enjoy, especially when we can do the kits en masse and in peace and quiet! It is definitely NOT fun to make kits under duress or with spectators!
So, there you have it! When you order a quilt kit from Quilted Twins, there’s a bit of Becky or me in them all! Most of the time, she’s written the patterns, and I’m cutting the kits, except when she’s in town, then she’s pumping them out faster than I can even think of!
Get the Deep Blue Sea in Blues Kit HERE for just $102. Get the WHOLE OCEAN BLUE LINE here.
Now go and ENJOY those fabrics!
