A Blast from the Past - again

Many years ago, long before I started quilting, we were visiting a church in Michigan and the ladies had a table of things for us to choose from. We could have whatever we needed from the table.

We had very little at the time, so we felt so blessed.

Then a lady came up to me and told me that their ladies had made a quilt for me!

Wow.

I wasn’t quilting at that point, but I did know how to sew and I was speechless.

I totally loved the quilt - and was so awed that anyone would make something so beautiful for me/us!

We used that quilt for many years.

In my recent quest to clean out that one room, I had come across this quilt again. I decided to go ahead and wash it again and get it dried and put up with my other precious quilts.

At the time of receiving the quilt, I asked the ladies how they made it. They said that they had a certain pattern and various ladies in the church took blocks home and made them and then finally someone put them together. At the time, the lady told me that the key to a cohesive quilt was the repetition of fabrics in the various quilt blocks. I nodded. I understood that even if I had never made a quilt in my life.

I filed it away, however. I remembered.

I am sure that their gift of this precious quilt did have an impact on my becoming a quilter. It was maybe 10 years later before I made my first quilt - maybe not quite 10. I had 5 young children and couldn’t find the time to do much of anything except “exist”.

Back to the current.

As I hung this quilt on the line to let it dry, I noticed a hole in it.

I need to fix it. I didn’t do it yet, but I will. I opted to put it in my stack of quilts unfixed because I was running out of time before my company was going to arrive.

I am so thankful for that group of ladies in Croswell, MI. Their gift to me so many years ago speaks even today of warmth in a very real way, but also of caring, time and love for me/us.

I know that sometimes quilters don’t actually receive quilts. I wasn’t a quilter yet, but I will probably keep this one even longer! It has a special place in my heart!
