"Mercantile"

This one I put off and put off quilting because I didn’t know how to quilt it. In the end I decided that “not” finishing it was doing myself a disservic. It would never be finished if I didn’t finish it! (Words of wisdom there!) That also might be a slight exaggeration as I could get someone else to finish it.

So I finished it. I decided maybe it will never be an heirloom, but I wanted it enjoy it as a quilt. Maybe it will be an heirloom as well - but not because of the quilting! :)

This is a Lori Holt quilt - from start to finish. I believe I used mostly her fabrics in it - but if not, I tried to match the style of her fabrics with what I used. The pattern is hers and is a freebie.

I had a great time making it and it went together much faster than I thought it would. Samplers and I are not the best of friends, so I was a little unsure about making it. You can never get in a rhythm with a sampler as all the blocks are different.

Many times I don’t care for them because nothing seems to ‘go’. However, Lori solved those issues by putting the blocks in the round with the softer fabrics behind the round blocks.

This is a PIECED Top. The only applique are the round blocks which you cut out using a template after the blocks are pieced. Yes, it is a bit nerve racking to start cutting into your fabric of a block that took a while to piece. But I figured, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Besides cutting myself, the worst would be slipping and having to redo the block. And that isn’t really too bad in light of all the things going on in the world! :) My husband made me a round 12” acrylic piece that I could cut around with my rotary cutter. He used his CNC machine.

And I LOVE it. This was one that I would only part with to an immediate family member. One of my kids spoke up for it. :)

Note. When making this type of pattern, I did not cut out all the blocks at once. Instead I cut out 2 or 3 at once and then sewed them up. Then I cut out the next ones. It was too slow to cut them all at once without any feedback. The ‘feedback’ for me is a finished block or feeling like progress is being made.

Get your free Cutting Guide here and the Sew Along BLOCK Guide is here -

which is the main pattern.

I have no idea if it will continue to be a free sew along guide, but for now it is. So, if this is interesting to you - get it now. My advice only.

I hope you have enjoyed seeing these photos as much as I enjoy looking at them.

Once again - this is part of my Lori Holt series of quilts I started in 2024. Let me share with you where I am so far in the series. The photos are in no particular order though I did start this journey with nr. 1 as shown.

Thanks so very much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading.
