That 9 patch challenge - how am I coming along so far?

Well, I’ve been making 9 patches - mostly from leftovers so far, except for the little ones for the blue blocks.

What I mean by that is that I have had boxes and bags of 2.5” squares that were just sitting around. I had thrown things in there that were also 2, 3 and 4 squares sewn together already.

I decided to take the time to work on cleaning out these and take all of the strips that had 2 or 3x already sewn together and make them into 9 patches until I get them all used up. Sometimes these were leftover units from something else I had done - and had made a few too many.

As a result, I am making two kinds of 9 patches -

One is with the dark in the corners.

The other is the kind with no rhyme nor reason to them.

So far in July I have put together this many 9 patches:

For the blue/cream - 251

For the one blue strips quilt top - 20

6.5” 9 patches all colorful - 67

6.5” - darks in the corner and center - 77

This makes for a total of 415 9 patches in July so far if my math is right.

Now I’m writing this with some of the month left, so hopefully I’ll have time to make more. In a lot of ways, however, the easy 9 patches are finished - as I’ve used up a lot of my already partially finished pieces.

I’m not making it a focus and I’m thrilled I’ve been able to use up a lot of those “dregs” or “leftovers” of partly made 2.5” strips that were sewn together. That has helped clean out a LOT so far.

I’m playing around with a design to use these. I’ve decided to make these blocks out of some of them. I’ve got to bring it into the Electric Quilt program and figure something out.

Thanks so much for coming along with me.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
