Prep for our Summer Outreach

I’ve been a little sidetracked in the last few weeks. There are several things going on at once. I do try to keep this blog to quilting and quilt related or Quilted Twins related things.

However, other things going on does affect my ability to focus.

What, you ask?

Well, we are having a Vacation Bible school of sorts - but for the 4 Saturdays in July and first Saturday in August. We actually do have a lot of preparation for these five days. I told the others I could be a go-fer - meaning I could go get stuff as needed. These are some of the things requested for games.

I’m in charge of prizes, some English lessons, getting snacks purchased and passed off to the lady who will be doing it, and I will help with registration if needed.

Also, I will be preparing a lunch for the helpers so we can eat immediately afterwards as the timing is weird for us - 11 am to 2 pm, which is right during our lunch time. Because there will be clean up afterwards, we wanted to offer our helpers some food to give them energy to finish the work of cleaning up before going home.

We are so relieved we didn’t start last Saturday as we had a high of 95F or something like that.

So, let me show you some of things I’ve been preparing. It really hasn’t been sewing related this year - but crafty related to some extent. We’ve been printing some prizes and many of them are being transformed into key chains.

I also spent some time last week shopping with a lady, and we bought a lot of snacks, water, cups, etc. Each week I will be preparing on Fridays for feeding 10 or so on Saturdays.

I had started this blog post earlier and then it got pushed aside.

Just today (Thursday) I made about 35 bean bags for games. Thankfully my husband helped me turn the squares and then get them the same weight! :)

I rumbled around my fabrics and found some heavier weight fabrics from which I cut 6” squares. I then went to the store and got some red kidney beans, guessing how many packages of beans to buy. (In the end I was pretty close, but I ended up with 3 bags too many - but I can use them in chili!)

I sewed them together, right sides together using 1/2” seam allowances, trimmed the corners, filled the bean bags with beans, weighed them to get them the same and then sewed the opening shut.

I know some quilters do not want to do any sewing except quilting, but I do tend to do other things as needed. Recently I fixed my husband’s jeans (repaired/patched). I can’t say that I necessarily prefer doing that, but I will do it.

So there’s that. I’ve hemmed curtains for someone else, and fixed a few odd things here and there. I hemmed some pants for a handicapped couple in our church, for example.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
