Some Hearts with a Different Feel

We are currently having a 5 week Saturday Bible Club of sorts - sort of like a Vacation Bible School some churches in the states have. However, ours our only on Saturdays for a set specific period of time.

This year our theme has been about the whole world be the Human Race and each week we will be featuring one continent (except for Australia and Antarctica- if you are reading from Australia, I know, I’m sad we are leaving you out as well). Anyway, Our first week was South America. This past Saturday was Asia, and next week is Africa, then Europe, and finally North America.

I decided for the week of Asia to make a special effort to make a heart for each of the kids who came to receive one - using fabrics either featuring Asian motifs or fabric directly from a country in Asia.

So this is what I did.

I did add a cross to each one to remind the children that Jesus loves Asia. I had to sew the hearts on by hand and yes, it took a bit of time, even though I tried to be fast.

Also, I just learned a trick about threading needles yesterday. I need to try it. It’s - if you are having trouble getting the thread to go through the eye of the needle - we usually lick the thread - the trick was to not lick the thread, but lick the eye of the needle - and the thread will go right in. Well, yesterday I saw that ‘trick’ after I had finished putting on all the crosses. I did have a nice long beading needle to use, however.

I made 49 different hearts. We had 46 kids, so there were three leftover, but one of the ladies really liked them, so she kept the leftovers.

I did find one more around my machine, that had fallen behind it and to the right, but I decided since I already had taken the 49 there, it was enough - and it was!

In close up - I ended up with 5 different fabrics. I actually also had some from Japan, but decided to not use it as I had enough. Note. I try to brush the little threads off before I photograph them, but sometimes I just don’t even see them until I put the photos on the blog post. I need to learn how to take off threads!!

They turned out very pretty! I did not use these as part of the I found a Quilted Heart (www.ifaqh.com) activity as they are not supposed to be handed out - those are supposed to be “found”.

I did have fun making these, but it take a bit of time over a couple of weeks to find the fabrics, quilt them and then make the hearts and decorate them, etc.

But as always, small quick projects are a nice break from very large quilt tops.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
