Rachael and I gave it a Lick and Promise
Our garden!! Now this will be an exciting adventure.
It could be that it will burn up in about a month - we’ll see.
On the evening before we left Poland - so that was Wed., May 7, Rachael and I took a handful of seeds and a hoe and some hope and went on down to mom’s lake to plant some squash, pumpkin and cucumber seeds along the banks of the water.
We had done something similar back when our children were just little. We then forgot all about it as life was hectic!
Somehow we remembered a few weeks later and we went back to the place where we had put the seed and there were plants EVERYWHERE.
Now that was wonderful peat - as dad had cleaned out part of the lake bed and pulled up dirt. We put seeds in it and walked away.
When we went up, there were cucumbers and maybe zucchini? We can’t remember? everywhere.
It’s silly, isn’t it?
But the soill down there is so good. All gardeners know that a good soil is the basis of a good garden. If your soil is pure compost or peat with a lot of water - you will get something.
I told Rachael the time for the peas and radish were past in FL as it was TOO hot for them. So we planted only warm weather loving plants.
I also told her to wait a week to see if something pops up but she’s already gone down there to check - 2.5 days later! :) The soil we chose this time is still very dark/black, but it’s not the peat we had before. However, if the seeds come up, and get enough water, I have no reason to see why hot weather loving plants shouldn’t do well in Florida. That is, if it isn’t too hot in the next 2 months. Zucchini, cucumbers and yellow squash could be done in the first two months. If they grow very fast, I suppose even more quickly. We’ll see. When we left there, it was 80F all the time. That’s weather that will germinate seeds like those quickly.
I was showing Rachael that there are some good plants under that huge leaf which is apparently a weed. :)
I’ve not decided if I am going to do a regular garden in Poland this year. I probably won’t. My freezer is so full still from last year as we weren’t here last winter to use up my corn, beans and pumpkin that I put in last year!
I may just focus on flowers this year this year in Poland. Or maybe I won’t do any gardening. Maybe I’ll focus on just sweeping the back porch. Anyway, I’m not feeling it this year. Maybe that little 20 min. adventure digging in mom’s black dirt was it for this year.
Anyway, here are some pictures Rachael has sent me.
Naturally as the plants have grown, so have the weeds.
This gorgeous sand crane was definitely checking out what was down there. Now, we know mom has rabbits, raccoons, turtles, sand cranes and I’m not sure what else. So, our lovely plants also have to try to survive all those natural preditors. :)
I told Rachael not to worry about weeding or watering. That’s the beauty of this experiment. We’re going to see if she gets anything at all from this careful planting of warm weather plants. It is very possible it will be too hot and nothing will produce at all. If there is drought, then the plants will die, unless their roots have grown strong and long enough to reach the water.
So, we’ll keep you updated periodically about this project. It’s more an interesting little “what will happen” type of thing than any serious gardening.
But thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Rachael does have some wonderful gardening fabrics in the store - for those of you who love to raise plants indoors or outdoors!
Check them out. Here are a few. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the page of the actual fabric.
We also have many more than that - I only gave you a taste. Just search for plants, nature, foliage, leaves, trees, etc. on the website.
We also have gardening fabrics. Here’s one bundle we have.
So there you go. I may or may not give you an update on this once a month or so. Maybe every other week if there is anything to report.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
