"Bobbin Box" - Wall hanging - a rescue finish!
I came by this little wall hanging top this past year - while we were traveling. I am not sure if it was in a thrift store or in the place where they gave things to missionaries called the Widow’s Jar. I really can’t remember. But I ended up with this bundle of Bonnie and Camille fabrics bundled up with a very small top that was finished. Well, it wasn’t FINISHED as it wasn’t quilted but it was made.
So I decided that I needed to just finish up this little project. Someone had gotten disillusioned by It (I’m guessing) and didn’t finish it up. After making such tiny blocks, I think I would have. But of course, I don’t know the story behind it.
t did have beautiful colors and I wanted it to be finished.
So I quilted it on my Janome and used those wavy lines with the walking foot. I thought a bunch of wavy lines might help the bit of wonkiness that was in the top sort of be diminished. And it did. I thought it turned out great!
Working with the spools as small as they are sort of magnifies any imperfections. I know that. You probably know that as well.
I thought the sewist did a fine job and I wanted to finish it in honor of whoever did the work.
There was enough of the stripe left in the package of fabrics so that I was able to get enough binding out of it. But just barely. I’m glad, as I do like a stripe for a binding!
I have no idea who started it - but I’m thankful.
Here are some closeups of that wavy lines walking foot quilting
Once I washed it, I did dry it on my cutting mat in an effort to help pull and shape it into a rectangle. I really do like it!
It is my only “Bonnie and Camille” fabric and/or project that I am aware of.
I may try to find a spot in my sewing room to hang it up so I can enjoy the pretty colors. Maybe the long arm room would be better, though, as I have more wall space down there.
I don’t often rescue projects such as this, so this was a different experience for me.
Have you seen this project? Obviously it’s old by now since Bonnie retired from the partnership of Bonnie and Camille a while ago now. However, I wasn’t really aware of them when they were popular. I tell you, I was in my own world - which didn’t involve many big name designers.
And, if YOU happen to be the person who made this top - Thank you!
(The likelihood is infintesimal, but you never know, so let me say it here!) I like how it looks finished - and the more I think about it, the long arm room is the perfect place for it!
I will include this on my list of finished quilts for this year but kind of with an asterisk. :) I really have to call that list anymore “Quilts my hand touched in 2026” especially since a few of them were actually finished in Florida by the long armer, Diane and so many donated tops are being finished as charity quilts.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
