"Double 9 patch" - very small blocks - finished

I did get my Double 9 patch using scrap blues and which came out of the challenge that Edyta Sitar gave us last summer - to make 9 patch blocks. I did take the time to make small ones. The little 9 patches finish at 2.25” so the whole double 9 patch block in the quilt is only 6.75” - smaller than any of this type of block I had ever done before.

As I’ve noticed before, when I work on a quilt like this - and have the blocks in my living room and while lying on the floor, the colors of the backgrounds aren’t nearly as obvious as to the color changes. Let me show you. I mean, there are differences visible, but not like while hanging outside.

It was good for me to make such small blocks, but I’m conflicted in how I feel about the quilt.

I think if I were to do it again, I’d like to go ahead and make MORE blocks so the quilt is a bed size quilt. Right now I’m not sure what to do with such a cute quilt but not large enough for our queen beds. It finishes at about 69”x83”, though it didn’t seem that large to me when I hung it on the line.

Once again - while I know I was tired of making these blocks, if I ever want to do it again, I’ll just stick it out and make more blocks so that the quilt can be queen sized.

I used different scrappy backgrounds on the creamy/blotchy side of off-white. I used blues that kind of fit with the Edyta Sitar vibe - meaning, the warmer blues. I actually don’t have that many of those shades, so it was an exercise for me to find them in my stash.

One thing - if you are new here and not sure why it is called a Double 9 patch, it’s because the main block is made of 5 individual 9 patches and 4 plain squares cut to 2.75”, but formed into an overall 9 patch. Let me show you.

The block as shown finishes at 6.75”. Before sewn - it is 7.25”. The individual 9 patch blocks are 2.75” before sewn into the top and finish at 2.25” after being sewn in. Once again, this means those TINY little squares finish at 3/4”. Yes, they are small. No, I didn’t piece individual blocks. I used the strip piecing method.

I thought it would be incredibly easy to find all those blues since I have 3-4 shelves of blues or blue blends. However, most of the blues I have actually fall into the cooler blues and not the warmer ones. It does sound kind of funny to say that since we think of blue as a cool color, but there are warmer and cooler blues. Edyta loves those warm colors.

I strip pieced the whole thing using 1.25” strips. I’ve made plenty of 9 patches using 1.5” strips, but as I mentioned, this is the first time going this small.

This kind of quilt is kind of simple, so not too much to explain or share about it any subtleties that exist in the design. They just aren’t there. At least not in this version.

The layout I used:

The quilt roll:

I bound it with more scrappy blue strips.

I’m thrilled to have this one finished!

Thanks once again for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
