Fractured Squares with border - from the 2.5" strips series
Here’s another top finished.
I’ve had the main blocks finished for some time now but wanted to add a border - and a did. The border actually “Made” this one work and look amazing.
Let me show you.
I’ve made this quilt before but I wanted to add this fun border - an interesting one that helped me use up even more 2.5” strips in these colors.
Now I’ve made this quilt before - here are the two versions that are this same pattern..
I wanted to do it again in the big version but with an added border similar to the one I put on the smaller quilt.
So, I did. I made the border 10” wide so those strips are 8”, 7” and 6” finished in the quilt. That helps use up strips! :)
It’s BIG. It’s 104”x104”.
I’m glad I added that border as it truly helped me use up a LOT of those strips. The thing I see now that I have it laid out is that I was a little heavy with the y ellows and oranges and could have used more browns and greens to tone it down a bit. But it’s okay.
I will, some time in the future, add a border option to the free pattern on the site called Fractured Squares where I tell how I made this border. But the rest of the quilt is the same, so not entirely necessary to rewrite the whole pattern.
I, once again made TOO many blocks — I have 12 blocks of 4 leftover - meaning ones that look like this -
Naturally I want to use them, so I worked a bit in EQ and decided, rather to make another normal quilt with a regular layout, to make up this one. I just need to find more of that tan fabric.
My DIL had given me about 4 of those rather large sheets and I think I’ve only used 2 of them. At the moment, I don’t know where the others are or if I have used them up almost completely. If I can them or something very similar, I think I’ll do this with the last 12 blocks. I have no idea why I went so overboard in making up these blocks, but I made way too many of them! I’ll show it with a tan border or with a colorful one.
Any opinions on which is the more interesting option? I’m all ears.
I’m actually very interested in either finding that fabric or just coming up with some other fabric similar enough to use in this quilt. I’ve not made anything quite like it. I put in empty blocks in the spaces so that I had enough by using only 12 to make this top.
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this.
