A Gift for my Son and his Wife

My youngest son and his wife haven’t really gotten many quilts from me and they actually have a lot of room. Well, I did give them two or three when we went there in January or February, but this quilt was actually made for them.

It’s a king size monster - 110”x108” (wider than tall) and I ran the design by them before I left in April/May earlier this year. Jess had chosen the panel and I needed four of them for this quilt. I designed the quilt around the exact size of the panel blocks so I had to tweak the pattern as I worked with the blocks. They weren’t square, so my first design was just “sort of” right as I had guessed that the blocks were 10” square. They weren’t. They were 9-1/4”x10” when I sewed right next to the checkered black border aroudn each block.

I had to keep checking things as I worked on the top.

I did repeat the checkered look that was around the printed blocks by making that checkerboard border.

I considered it the reptition of the theme.

I am planning on using that same maroon/deep red/brown planks fabric to bind it.

Overall, it is actually not a difficult design. The outer checkerboard border may have taken as many hours to construct as the rest of the top together. Well, maybe not. Making thje sashing pieces with those 9 patches for the sashing and cornerstones took quite a bit of time, actually. But all those checkerboards and 9 patches really made it special!

I can’t wait to see it on their bed! (after it is quilted, naturally)

I weighed this top and before anything else is added to it - just the top is 3 lbs, 5 oz. It feels heavy. :) It is really just because it is so big!!

I am very pleased with it, by the way. Usually quilting makes these tops even better, so I am looking forward to getting it quilted. I’m taking it to Florida to get it finished up by our friends who have a king frame and can do it easily (well, the word easily might be an exaggeration, but you know what I mean).

This one is so big it was hard to get a nice photo of it on the floor in my living room.

I did use a generous amount of that wood planks in this quilt. We have it in the shop - and it is here. It is only $5.99/yard and so handy for this look! I was thrilled that i brought enough with me to Poland! :) The one I used here is called red.

I did get the off white from the shop as well and it is one of the backings that we have - but I don’t know what the naem of it is - it’s a cream on cream. Then for the checkerboard border, I did go to my stash and pulled about 3 other burgundy and maroon fabrics (I had to research the difference - maroon has red/brown and burgundy is more red/purple - I had to learn that), but I used both in the border. I also used 3 grays/light blacks in addition to the print that was used in the middle of the top.

We do not have any more of those panels, so I can’t share that link with you. I am not writing the pattern for anyone because it is so specific to ONLY these panels that it wouldn’t do anyone else much good unless you had the exact same size of panel blocks.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey.

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
