A smaller version of Gingham Plaid quilt top finished
When I made that other gingham plaid quilt top which I showed a bit ago, I used my leftover fabrics to make another one - same fabrics, but smaller blocks - 4.5” squares, but same principle.
I had enough to make this quilt top. The fabric I actually ran out of was the medium green.
I had picked that up when we were in Indiana at a place that gave missionaries things. They had a LOT of individual pillowcases - not in sets, and these were king size pillowcases. We were limited on how many sheet sets we could take, but not on the pillowcases or duvet covers. So…….well, you know. :)
Obviously other people really wanted the sheet sets BUT NOT the ‘no sets’ things like individual pillowcases. And the duvet covers were in a completely different space. I think a lot of Americans just don’t use them so they didn’t consider them in high demand. So I took two, I think. :) (all cotton).
I took only one white sheet set- I think it was a twin size set - as it was the only cotton set. So many sheets these days are microfiber and I just don’t care to sleep on them nor do I want to use them on any bed I might have.
ANYWAY, I digress. These squares are made from
1. butterfly fabric - made from leftovers I bought from a lady in 2015,
2. a white on white print and
3. this green medium print which used to be pillowcases.
I am delighted at how both of these tops came out. I want to make a few more lap size quilts to be used as gifts for relatives and people around me when I don’t know if they want or need a bed sized quilt. However, many people like something to snuggle with while watching tv or a movie or something in front of a screen, or reading a book in a cool room, etc.
Anyway, this is taken from Lori Holt’s book, Farm Girl Vintage 2 Shown below are both - side by side. The first one was made with 7.5” squares and is 63”x77”. This smaller squares one is 52”x68”. I have debated over and over making it two more rows longer - what do you think? I could come up with more green squares and make it 52”x76”. Maybe I should do that, as it would cover a body better. I am just afraid of that long and skinny look. :)
This second one was made from 4.5” squares.
63”x77”
52”x68”
Overall, I’m really surprised at how much I like this quilt top. I really had laughed at the idea the first time I saw one (which was not in Lori Holt’s book, but on a Facebook group). But, then I saw one on a You Tube video where the long armer was sharing a finished one and I ended up liking it quite a bit. It is a great one for a quick finish.
4.5” squares on the left, and 7.5” squares on the right
So, if you are working on some intense and difficult projects and yearn for something to be done quickly - consider one of these. Just take your fabrics - you need three - one dark, one medium and a white and make them as shown. All squares are the same size. You will use approximately twice as many of the mediums as others.
For me the hardest part of this one was making sure that the medium was the right shade of light. But it is fine.
We do have some in our fabric families at Quiltedtwins.com which would work well as these - they are called Basket weave and are only $5.99/yard. So, if you already have white and a darker fabric you want to use, just get one of these basket weaves to go with it and it will look fantastic!
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
