A Found Top - "Star Quilt"!
There is a story behind this top.
I do not know when I made it - but it was a while before I started my blog and way before we started our store. Maybe it was 2014?
I found a pattern in a book I had called 50 Country Quilt projects. I loved it.
I made it.
I put it in a drawer because I had spotted a mistake the last time I looked at it, but then when I sat down tot fix it, I couldn’t find it again. I was so frustrated that I couldn’t find it. So, I folded it up nicely and put it in a drawer. I was not going to finish it until I found the mistake and fixed it. It was too much work to purposely leave a mistake in it.
After I got through with some of my other things, this was one of the things I went for. I opened that drawer, pulled out that top and put it on the floor to see if I could find the mistake.
I did!! Very quickly, in fact!
Now I could fix it. I didn’t have the fabrics anymore from this top. I couldn’t find any of any of these three fabrics in my stash at all.
So, in order to fix the problem, I went to my greens and found something very similar.
And I fixed it! It probably took less than 10 minutes to take the seam ripper out and pick out the part I needed to, remove the offending block and go upstairs and sew the new square in. Maybe it took 15 minutes.
I then laid it out on the floor and admired it - after I pressed.
It was 56”x56”.
Then I went upstairs, determined to find that book, and I did.
Here’s the quilt in the book. I had to laugh at the design, actually as it is all in black and white - and quite difficult to read. I mean, nowadays someone would have had this in color, I think so anyway!
The book is from 1990, so I doubt you will be able to find it - except possibly a random thrift store or guild sale!
I realized after looking at the picture in the book that I did want to make it larger as I absolutely loved how the design fits right into the middle of the bed.
At first I didn’t want to - because I didn’t have the same fabric exact match - but I did have some very similar colorways, so I decided to make this lap size into a queen size top - 92”x92”. I just added some off white/cream and then green - a big 15” border.
I’m thinking my DIL might want this one since she absolutely loves green. We’ll see. I don’t think she reads here, so we’ll see.
As I stopped for the day, I’m working on making a backing.
This is one of my recent finds! What fun! I’m thrilled that I was able to find the wrong square!
Oh, and since this is now what my personal tops waiting to be long arm quilted shelving unit looks like, as soon as I get the backing done for this one, I’ll add it to the shelf.
And if you caught that comment and what it means, well, yes, it’s true. I do have probably 11 quilts (personal) waiting for binding, but I decided to push very very hard and get as much quilting done as I could this past week before a new month starts.
I did have these shelves empty for a day or two. This is the shelving unit I’m doing for my own quilts. My goal from now on is to not have more quilts ready to be quilted than I can fit on these shelves! (Personal quilts - charity quilts are a completely different matter.)
And that’s where I am on this one!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!
