Early September Garden Update

The garden is on its way out. Yes it is. In a way, that’s sad. But it’s how gardens work.

I’ll show what I’ve got by categories.

Flowers -

In fact, after this I will take my flowers out and put the containers in the back of the house. They were less than amazing this year - especially this late in the year and I don’t feel like prolonging and caring for the big containers when they aren’t producing that many flowers anymore.

The only beautiful flowers that are still beautiful are these - the rest just look tired.

I will also pick out all of these flowers as I want to pile this ring with a lot of grass clippings and leaves to give myself a nicer layer of compost than I had this year. My flowers never filled in as well as they did last year and I am a bit disappointed by them, so I just want to make the soil better for next year.

Because of that I need to give myself some time to pile it high with good stuff which will then decompose over the winter and be ready for next year. I could just pile on the compost next year, but it is easier to just put grass clippings and leaves in the ring and use what the resulting compost will be next spring.

I probably haven't kept up wtth the watering on these, but even when I did, they didn't flourish like I thought they should.  I'm going to pile this ring with compost goodies now that the pictures has been taken so that next year my flowers will do better.

But my veggies!

Zucchini -

I have harvested over 170 zucchini this year. They have been given away with a few being used for various cakes and bread.

But mostly I have given them away. Everyone is tired of them, however. I’m kind of glad that the plants are dying. It’s really time. It really is. But even at that, there are some young ones coming on and still growing.

Corn -

We’ve been eating corn and harvesting it for a few weeks now. As we eat our meals, we are cooking extra corn, and then I take what we don’t eat off the cob and put it in the freezer. I’ve been collecting quite a few bags of this deliciousness which we will enjoy later in the year or next year.

So far we've picked 155 cobs of corn.

Pumpkins -

I’ve got a lot of pumpkins coming! They will be all small ones - as I planted the small sugar sweet and/or Jack-be-little. I am seeing some strange colored pumpkins, however, so could be interesting. Even some of the Jack-be-little pumpkins are not typically orange.

Yellow Beans -

I’ve got some yellow wax beans - and they are coming on strong. I planted the original ones in June but the ones I’m getting now were planted quite a bit later than that. I’m freezing the extras that we’re not eating and putting them in the freezer.

Sunflowers - (not veggies, but food for the birds!) They are also providing nectar for the bees.

I’ve got lots of sunflowers - both tall and short. These are bringing me so much delight!

My son, Tim, took some photos for me! These are his!

These are my own photos - I wanted to show you the variety of colors of sunflowers!

We think this one plant is about 11’ tall!

Peppers -

The plants have been pretty much ignored, but there are a few peppers on them. I put four in the ground, but only one of the plants isn’t covered with pumpkin plant/leaves at the moment. My bad.

Since these are very hot peppers, I don’t mind having just a few. With these, a few go a long ways!

So there’s my early September update. From now on I will probably just mostly giving summaries as the garden is really just fading away. The plants are mostly just finishing and being done. But we’ll see.

Some pumpkins will need to be havested soon, but so far I’ve not done that with any. It just seems so hot out there to be harvesting pumpkins, especially if I want to use them for decorating my porch.

I don’t want them to rot - and it seems like they should stay better, longer, in the garden.

So there you are. That’s what the garden looks like now.

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
