"Pinwheels on Display"

This is a super simple block based on a log cabin, or at least that’s how I look at it.

I added a little pinwheel effect to the center. I made the whole thing in fall colors since I do try to make a fall colored quilt or two in the fall. While it’s not fall yet, I wanted to work on this top now. I’m certainly ready for cooler weather!

(We’ve been having 80-85 F weather for weeks now and this is quite unusual for us!)

Anyway, this layout is a 12x12 layout so it takes 144 blocks. I did use my 2.5” strips and pulled from my bags to make these blocks. I used my browns, oranges, reds, greens, some golds and a few blues just to spice it up. I also pulled from both whites/tans and creams for the light part.

I added the pinwheel effect in the center of the block to give the block a bit of fun.

The block this is based on looks like this:

When I made my blocks I literally cut 144 of the 2.5”x8.5” strips first and then worked off of those.

When I got all finished, I had miscounted and needed to make one more block. :(

I did put them together in groups of 4 to look like this before I put the whole top together.

I tried to lay out the blocks first on my floor in order to try to keep some of the colors separated from each other. It’s the same old, same old when trying to make sure the blocks and colors are spread out. It works to move a few blocks and then it doesn’t. That’s when you just put them together.

The final top ended up looking like this. My husband commented on how much he liked it. I told him I knew he would because he likes any quilt I make with burgundies and autumn colors!

While I didn’t want the same fabrics to meet each other, it happened from time to time and I decided to just not worry about it and move on.

I was so happy to use up so many strips and this one went together quickly! After doing some of those smaller block quilts or with pretty tedious piecing, it was nice to get a nice looking top together so quickly. The huge bonus as I mentioned, was that all I had to do was pull from my already cut bags of 2.5” strips.

Here it the layout and you can see it is large. This one is easy to make larger or smaller, but you do need to work in increments of 2x each direction.

This top is 96"x96".

So there you are - one of my newest 2.5” tops from scraps. I’m happy with it. While pinwheels aren’t my favorite effect, in this top - I like it. (I tend to not care for a whole bunch of pinwheels all grouped together with no space around them individually.)

Thank you so much for coming along with me on my journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
