Black Friday - here and there

Black Friday in Poland

Since we've come to Poland many things have changed.

Of course, we've been here for a while - as we arrived in Poland back in 1994. This was an era of rapid growth and many changes. For us, it was a like a step back in time. Life was slower and more simple for us - we couldn't possibly do everything like we had done in the USA. We didn't have a vehicle and doing the simplest of errands took quite a while. I planned on it taking an hour to do any one thing - going to the post office, to the bank, stopping at the store, etc.  Whereas in my home town of Dade City, FL I could make a quick round and hit 4 things - post office, bank, shopping at two stores, in 1 hour, here I had to plan 4 hours to get those same four errands done.  But that was mostly because we didn't have a vehicle, AND it seemed like there were lines everywhere we went.

During the ensuing years, we have gotten a whole lot of western stores. No, we don't have Walmart, Hobby Lobby, or Joann Fabrics or places like that. But we do have nice big supermarkets now. And we have hypermarkets.

At least in this ad they translated it.  Czarny Piatek means Black Friday - Literally it translates - Black Friday - the whole week.

So when did "Black Friday" start to be celebrated here in Poland?

This is my favorite sewing machine place. I didn't get the impression they speak a lot of English there, but they are still having a Black Friday sale!

A few years ago when we were doing a Christmas outreach to the poor and area children's home, I was buying many toys for area children's home. I noticed that one or two of the big international hypermarkets had big sales on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Of course, Thanksgiving isn't a holiday here. It all seemed rather arbitrary to me, but once I caught on that they were having those big sales, I started looking for them. I did pretty well for a couple of years - buying literally thousands of dollars of toys during those days.

But they weren't called "Black Friday" sales.  However, in the last few years, I've noticed the term "Black Friday" being used more and more often. This year it seems to be "everywhere".

Lidl is having a Black Friday sale as well.

It is funny to me.  The ads are usually quite a mix of English and Polish.  I know that many of the younger people have English in school, but English is not the official "second language" of Poland and many people here do not speak it. I can only imagine how they feel when they see these titles.

Rachael's prices are already very low, so she tried to think of something she could do as a promotion. She was able to come by these solids at a very good price, so we (we chatted about this - but of course it was her final decision) decided to offer a free yard of solid fabric for every $25 - without shipping - you order.

I know there is some fabric mixed in here that is not solid, but this is piled pretty high. I left the picture uncropped so you can could see more solids peeking around the back as well.
