"Lots of Pockets"

I finished up these two which are made out of pockets from my dad's shirts.  I had set the pockets aside when I made the set of shirts quilts that I made from dad's shirts for us kids,  my mom and some of the grands. I didn't have enough shirts to make every single grandchild a quilt. Mom and dad have 19 and then there are the 5 kids and mom.

I did stretch the shirts a lot by using some added fabrics from sashing or bandana or cowboy boot fabric.

I know that a lot of people who talk about upcycling shirts, tell you take the pockets off. But why? Why not use them? Wouldn't every kid love to have a pocket to put their valuables in? Multiple pockets = multiple places for goodies!

I decided not to get fancy with these, but rather, just to get these done!

So how did I do them? I just cut out each pocket with 8.5" squares. Because of that, sometimes they weren't centered as I couldn't get the full 8.5" if I had centered them. Sometimes I even had to add a bit to the corner of some of them - I sort of patched the 8.5" with a piece to make a 8.5" square.

Then I sashed them simply, added a not-so-simple cornerstone, and added a border. I used poly batting which should hold up fine even with this minimal quilting. 

I quilted with straight line quilting, washed and called them done.  They will be heading back to the states for grandkids of my dad - not sure which ones yet.

Aren't they cool?  Simple - but nice. I'd think any of the grands would like one!
