Big Fabric Haul - end of Month 7 update
As you know, if you’ve been reading me for some time now, you know that we were able to get this huge amount of nonquilting fabric last July. Since then I’ve been on a quest to make it, as much as possible, into mostly charity quilt tops. The fabric is pretty much all browns and blacks. I decided to start with the browns. I’ve been trying to average 1 quilt top a week out of these - and I am trying to use 10” squares. I have found that making small pieces out of thick fabrics makes for difficult piecing. So, in order to keep it easy on myself, I am cutting these pieces of yardage into 10” squares and what is too small for that becomes 8” squares.
Smaller than that is given away. Yes! Can you believe I said that?
I know, I know. I said that I was going to do those fancy on point quilt tops. However, I got involved with other things this month of January and didn’t get to those. I did, however, pick out the squares for those quilt tops and put them in nice zipper plastic bags and have them set aside. I will be able to make them more easily now that the pieces are all chosen out. That was kind of a biggie since I wanted to make all the squares different, if at all possible.
Instead, I had this idea of something easier - I thought of making a “Jenga” type quilt using those 10” squares and the solid brown or cream as the background. Now I had seen Jenny Doan and Donna Jordan make something along these lines (though with smaller blocks by far) plus I had made one a long time ago with the same idea (a free pattern from Moda, I think it was).
So, I wondered if it would look “ok” if I tried it. I really didn’t know, but I decided that, “Hey, why not try it - these are charity quilts - what better place to try things - as people choose what they like - if no one likes them, they will just leave them and choose something else. No pressure.”
So I did. Here they are.
Since January is a longer month, I made 5 tops - these are #27-31 I’m calling them my “Jenga charity quilt tops”. (Not really). Inspired by Jenga - the game.
When choosing “which” brown blocks to use, my only criterion was that they had to be light enough to show up on the brown I was using as the background. I think I want to do it again some other time, but using the cream as the background and using my darker blocks on it.
Hare are all 5 tops:
In case you are wondering what the whole series looks like so far - here it is - I’ve made a page on the website to help keep up with this series. At first I put the tops here and as I finish them, I replace the tops with the finished quilt. I made it so you can see a 31 second slide show of all 31 tops or quilts so far in teh series but you have to go to that link.
So there you are - I didn’t really want to stop doing my other things for this month to do these, but I did.
I didn’t dare get behind on these - am kind of already ready to be finished with these browns! (and I am no where finished with the fabrics!) so far, 31 tops, though! That’s cool.
I am super eager to see how quickly these finished quilts are chosen by my charity quilt recipients.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store!
