A small project - to get me going!
Usually when I come back from being away from my sewing machine/room for a while, I tackle something that’s just sitting in there. Sometimes it is blocks that are already put together. At least once I decided to finish up some panels that I had already sorted in a plastic shoe box.
This time, even though I was embroidering labels (though that’s a misnomer - my machine was) - I hadn’t decided on what to do yet.
I had these pieces of fabric sitting in my room - they were odd shaped and not very many of them. I decided to just go ahead and cut them into squares and make a little lap quilt out of them - letting however many squares I could get out of that stack determine the size. I was able to get 32 - 4.5” squares from those pieces. I decided on a 5x6 layout.
I framed those little pieces and then gave them a shadow, to hopefully help them jump off the background of the quilt. It only ended up being about 52”x63” quilt which will be a perfect lap quilt for my friend.
I have a lady I want to give the quilt to - for Christmas.
The fabric is odd - it is leftover scrubs fabrics. Apparently that lady we had bought a lot of fabric from back in 2015 had a source of fabric from a scrubs factory - and got a lot of the cutoffs. These were some of those. The prints on these are always really nice and the quality of the fabric is top notch!
After I put the top together (today) - I decided to see if I could find some more of those pieces in my daughter’s old bedroom to help make the border I wanted.
I did find more - and it was enough to make up the border. It is liberally pieced, but once I get it all quilted, hopefully my recipient will neither notice nor care if she does!
The squares do end up being 7.5”x7.5” which is an odd size - I used a 4.5” cut center piece and added the 1.5” cut red strips so that it was then a 6.5”x6.5” square (unfinished). Then by the time I added the shadow, it was an 8” square - finishing in the quilt at 7.5”.
So there you go. Maybe this little quiet project was just what I needed to get me going. I am starting to want to get going on a few things - I’ll just see how it goes.
Oh - the layout for this little cutie - it’s here. The layout shows cornerstones - I didn’t use them. I just used long strips between the rows.
Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
