Log Cabin ? - Up Greens #7 top finished

I’ll admit. I didn’t know what to do with these blocks.

Well, that’s not the entire truth. I had a plan.

Then I had misgivings.

In the end, I decided to ask the Facebook group which log cabin layout to use. I told them I would make the one that the most people voted for.

I guess we’re a good fit, because this was actually the one I first planned on making.

This is what happened:

I thought I liked this layout for these blocks. Then I began to have second thoughts. After all, my scraps were MUCH more scrappy than my layout showed. I didn’t really want to picture the Electric Quilt (EQ) picture as scrappy as I knew it would be (sheer laziness - and I also knew however I did it, it wouldn’t really be the fabrics I have in the places I have them).

I showed Rachael who thought number 1 was “cool”. I had wondered if it was too weird.

Then I played around a bit and came up with the next two and I then decided I liked number 2 better (and upon further looking - number 3 is also very fun!). Then I was completely unsure of myself. I had managed completely undermine my own confidence.

What to do. I really didn’t know.

That’s when I wrote Rachael and asked her what she thought of just letting the Facebook group decide which one to make.

“Good idea,” she said.

I showed them the three and told them I’d make the one that most people voted for. Now I realized that numbers 2 and 3 required a slightly different number of blocks, I but I could quickly make the 4 extra blocks I would have needed. However, I didn’t. The group voted as follows:

91 votes for number 1,

64 votes for number 2 and

46 votes for 3;

Thanks everyone who voted!

Here are the three choices I gave them:

I did put together the top as planned! And here it is.

It had appealed to me because it is different—certainly not your regular log cabin. But then this one takes 2 different blocks. One is a typical log cabin block and the other is a quarter log cabin block that is sort of off centered. The blocks are all 12.5” before being sewn into the quilt so this quilt only takes 64 blocks as shown - 32 of each kind. I really don’t normally work with such large pieces although I certainly have used them in some of my designs. The blocks end up being a nice sized 12.5” so it goes together quickly.

It took me about as much time to cut all of these out of the upcycleds as it did to actually sew it together. I thought I’d NEVER get done cutting!

What do I think now? I’m not sure.

Yes, it is different. My sis says it has a 3D look to it. I think I see that. Maybe I do. Maybe I don’t.

I originally thought I saw a stairway and frames that a family might put on the wall going up the stairs. Let me show you:

But now I simply don’t know. I’ll take ideas for a name for the design. I’d appreciate it. I need help.

I will say that when I made the two blocks - with the quarter log cabin, I made the rounds with the same fabrics, so that it makes an “L” shape.

With the regular log cabin blocks, I didn’t use the same fabrics on the legs of the block. I went completely scrappy on that. I also alternated shades on the quarter log cabin block as I was going for a light/darker/light/darker effect in hopes of making it more interesting and to give me that “frame” look I was trying to make.

From the other angle:

I’ll get the pattern written up - but for now it’s not done. But it will come. It’s not a difficult quilt at all. With no sashing and no borders, this one went together quite quickly.

But - I could certainly use some help with a name. For now I’ll call it “log cabin ?” I’ll change that once I decide from hopefully the many ideas you all have! I appreciate it. So many of you have such wonderful ideas - so full of creativity you are!

And just to review where we are on the UP Greens series. Here are the tops/quilts I’ve made so far from these green pieces of clothing and household linens such as tablecloths, duvet covers and sheets.

As a side note - if they aren’t “all the same” or have the same “look” - well, I’m trying really hard to make a variety of designs. I know I have a tendency to make chain blocks, interesting sashings and such - so I’m actually TRYING to make a variety and keep myself from “sameness”.

Thanks so much!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
