A Granny Square made like this looks like an Around the World Design in miniature. Fascinating!

But I made this block with a “granny square” in mind…so I’ll call it that.

The blocks are large - 18” in fact, so you only need 25 to make a rather large quilt - 102”. Skip the sashing and you’d still have a 92”x92” quilt!

Here’s what I made!

I made this one with my UP greens - but just imagine how beautiful this would be with fabrics that just sang! (Mine are only “so-so”.)

This little squares are all 2.5” cut pieces.

I didn’t like my dark-ish squares - but refused to redo them. Instead, I chose to place them at the edges of the quilt hoping that should it get used on a bed someday, the placement will be less noticeable than right in the middle of the quilt!

This top is made of a single block that looks like this: I put the half square triangles and yellow in the corners to give me a secondary design. (I will say that it looks really nice without the sashing as well.) I’ll try to remember to show that when I show the finished quilt.

This angle makes it look like it is on point and oh is it nice this way! The problem was, I promised to not make the next couple of quilts “on point”! So I deferred to my promise and left it a horizontal layout.

This angle is “not on point”.

Hint - I am going to make another in this series using smaller granny squares but making them “on point” - I had some 2.5” squares leftover from all my cutting up for this one. Sorry…spoiler.

And just so you can see “side by side” the layout as shown on Electric Quilt (EQ) program and the one in real life - here they are. I did not take the time to make exact coloration with the program, as you can see.

The first time I noticed how closely the design comes out like the plan, I was so happy! Previously I had thought it was going to be like sewing clothes - and I knew how often on my body the thing (top, blouse, skirt, etc.) looked quite different than on the pattern front! At least, I guess that is why I was surprised at how closely the EQ previews look like the finished top!

I’m standing on about the third step to head upstairs as I took this photo.

These blocks are pretty involved. They took me at least an hour each to make. Before you go groaning, just think of how many hours a day you waste. Then instead of vegetating in front of the tv for 1-3 hours every evening - go make 1-3 blocks. In just over a week you could have one of these tops done! Now if spending time in front of a tv is your ‘family time’ or ‘significant other time’ - then I can’t tell you to do this instead of that. But each of us are given 24 hours a day - no more and no less. Try to mindfully spend them.

Anyway…

I’m calling it “Jumbo Granny Squares” - “Jumbo” because these are large blocks (18”) and Granny Squares because that is what they are.
