Cultural: A trip to the Mountains of Southern Poland
Last week we went to the mountains for a few days. My husband wanted to go and visit a couple who have visited our church and have their own B & B.
They had invited us over a year ago and we hadn’t gone yet. Since my husband really REALLY wanted to go - of course, I went along. At that point, I was almost finished with the charity quilts, but not done - so I put the whole project on hold while we went south for 3 days.
We went to the part of Poland called “Bieszczady” - and is the mountainous part of Poland near the Slovakian or Ukrainian border. Let me show you a map. It is part of the Carpathian Mountain region.
It takes a long time to drive down there from where we live - at a minimum - 5 1/2 hours from here. Add to that a few stops, and it becomes a 6 1/2 hour or 7 hour journey! And all the while, still being in Poland! While driving where we were, at some points we were very close to the Slovakian or Ukrainian border.
Down in the part where we were, we did see a lot of pretty leaves and the beautiful mountainous areas. These particular mountains are more like the Appalachians than the Rocky Mountain range. I remember the first time we went to the Polish mountains and I kept looking for the peaks like you see in the Rockies. That was funny.

One of the things we did was to go on a train that took us about 30 minutes farther into the mountains - the train originally had been for logging companies. It cost about $8 for the round trip - which was strictly for tourists.
We didn’t go primarily for the scenery, but rather, to visit our friends, but this was a part of Poland we hadn’t been to before - so yes, it was enjoyable to see. Especially in October! They don’t have the number of red oaks or maples like I was used to in the Carolinas, but plenty of greens and golds and a few reds!
And there you are! It’s not that cold right now - in the 50sF currently!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this part of our trip. I didn’t really find anything ‘quilty’ on this trip except the combination of colors!!! I enjoyed just absorbing all the fall colors and beauty of nature!

Meanwhile…back home in Jozefow - I’m still trying to clean up a bit more each day. I don’t think some of you realized quite how much everything was just “everywhere” as I focused on getting those charity quilts done. So, I’m working on the floor and cleaning up piles and making the house presentable again.
