Saga Continues - Donations Keep on Coming!
Earlier this week….
“I am going to stop by your house with some tops from my mom on Thursday evening. I also have a fidget mat I made for your friend whose mom has Alzheimer’s (a different issue/project). Will that work for you?”
“Sure!”
- from Ewa - my personal Elf #1
Earlier today…. a lady from our local freecycle group wrote me
“Becky - I found some fabric in my house - and thought that maybe you might be able to use these for a good purpose. I will gladly give them to you” (translated from Polish for you).
“Super! I can come over right now and get it. When is good for you?”
“Great. You can come over now. (her address). (translated from Polish)
“Thanks. I’ll be there in less than 10 minutes.”
I went to her house and picked up the fabric she wanted to give me. She had sent me a photo which had intrigued me.
As I was talking with this lady she asked me if I would consider donating a quilt or two to the charity drive they have for sick children from our town every Christmas. I had already seen the auction they were going to do and thought I could probably find something in my house. Last year I donated my red bargello - shown below.
This year they want two things from each artist - one for the auction and the other for a sale - where people can walk in to a display and just buy it. I told my friend that I thought I could find something - rather, two somethings.
Then, she hesitantly asked me if she had some fabric that wasn’t big pieces, could I still use them? I told her, “Yes, I would be glad to cut them up for my friend’s (Ewa) mom who is glad to have something to do - making charity quilt tops!”
She was very happy to hear that.
Then a while later Ewa stopped by. I was thinking she was going to bring about 10 tops. I actually didn’t know what she had for me - as I thought she had already given me back most of the tops I had cut and bagged up for her earlier this year. Imagine my surprise when I heard a knock on the door and in comes Ewa with two BIG bags of tops! Enormous bags!
She laid them all out on the floor in the living room one at a time, which, at this point was nice and cleared out, and took a photo of each one. Then, I took them and folded them and put them on the table for a group shot!
Ewa’s mom really did a lot of creative work with these and took various random pieces and has made a lot of tops out them! There are 37 more tops here! Just wow! These will mix well with Fran’s tops - as I do like having a variety of things to offer people and not all one style. Obviously none of these are for this year - but I will begin to work them into the charity quilts in 2022.
While she was in my living room, I asked Ewa if she would be willing to make a couple of fidget mats as well for our Christmas charity effort for our town’s sick kids here in Jozefow - both the auction and the display with a stated price.
She said she would get right on it! I’ve got to think about what I’m going to do. I’m inclined to come up with a couple of smaller quilts - using second-hand things as a nod to our local freecycle group.
I’m still thinking. I probably should start tomorrow if I’m going to do something from scratch!
Oh, I did pass most of the fabric I got from the lady in the freecycle group off to Ewa - but I kept this beautiful piece! Ewa has been instrumental in making a LOT of those tops I showed above. She works with her mom in doing much of the work like cutting strips or making strips of strips and then letting her mom sew them together.
Anyway, I thought Ewa could use a least most of the fabric. What she can’t use, she will give to her friend who does crafts and works with people/kids and can use it. I think two of them were all cotton - but most of it wasn’t cotton. I already have enough slippery types for when I actually make some fidget mats - whenever that is!
Anyway…this isn’t what I had thought I would write about earlier today - but as the day went back and things happened - I wanted to share it with you all.
I spent a while today cutting squares for Ewa’s mom but managed to get some of my own sewing/cutting in as well. I cleaned up a bit more in the living room and worked on the floor with the mop and a sponge - still trying to get it back to it’s pretty shiny original state!
Have a great day wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on my quilting/sewing journey!
