Cultural: Price Check - Groceries, part 1

It has been quite a while since I wrote one of these. I think it is past time to do another.

I decided to go to Biedronka - which is a deep discount store and buy some staple items (and maybe some things that aren’t) - so we could take photos and then you can compare prices. I will try to make it comparable for similar things in the sizes that you normally buy.

So here goes. These are from Biedronka (which means Ladybug) - which is a deep discount store akin to Lidl, Aldi or Save-A-Lot in the states.

1 liter vegetable oil - 9.29 PLN or $1.95 (1 liter is about 34 fluid ounces)

3 red sweet peppers - $0.85/lb. so those three peppers cost me $1.00

butter - I bought two different kinds - 7 ounces each - $1.35 - $1.57 or $3.08 - $3.58/lb.

2.2 lbs. all-purpose flour - $0.56 or $1.27 for 5 lbs.

3 bananas - $0.54

1 liter of milk - 2% - $0.61/1 liter or $2.31/gallon

boneless chicken breast - $3.74 for the amount shown - 1.58 lbs. ($2.37/lb)

ground beef - $2.59/lb - this package is 14 oz and cost $2.30

shredded cheddar cheese - 10.6 ounces - $1.67 ($2.54/lb.)

yogurt - small 5 ounces containers - $0.25 each

gouda cheese - 400 grams $2.09 - $2.37/lb.

sliced gouda cheese - 300 grams$1.67 - $2.53/lb.

tortillas - pack of 5 large - $0.80

donut with chocolate covering - 1.94 oz. - $.025

apple pastries - $0.40 each

fresh cherries - $0.95/lb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cocoa powder - $2.61/lb - this container is 7.05 oz. and is $1.15

bacon - $1.80/lb.

special pack of apples - about $0.20 per apple as each bundle is $0.80

Polish sausage - kielbasa - $1.63/lb.

big loaf of Polish bread - chleb - $1.05 (900 grams or 1.98 lbs)

avocado - $1.19

This says “hand picked”. Hmm. I guess I figured all eating apples were hand picked.

My total spent was $35.31.

I didn’t get several things so I am going to continue this tomorrow with a short trip to Lidl for some more staples!

Generally speaking, I tried to buy the least expensive of what I was buying. The exception might be the kielbasa - as I didn’t spend too much time comparing lots and lots. We have many MANY different types.

I thought this post would be interesting to all of you.

Thanks so much for coming along with us - Have a great day wherever you are reading.
