Is Quilting A Seasonal Hobby?
I’m wondering.
Do you quilt seasonally? In other words, when it turns cold, do you quilt/sew more than when it is warmer?
I ask because traditionally, at least, it seems like not much new starts in the summer. It seems like there are fall pushes, new classes, and new ‘things going on’ - as well as the yearly International Quilt Festival in November and summer ends up being almost ignored.
Why is that?
I suspect it is because quilters simply sew less during the summer - whenever that is for you. I suspect the reasons will vary - let me give some of my thoughts on this.
Since the average age of a quilter is a 62 year old woman - at least it was a few years ago - At that age, many will be grandmothers and possibly have more responsibilities/opportunities with grandkids during the summer.
Quilters may have hobbies that take them outside during gorgeous weather such as gardening or traveling. This may use at least part of their disposable income.
Some quilters don’t have a/c and if the sewing room is hot, it is too be avoided, choosing to do other things and wait for cooler weather.
Quilters may have a family lifestyle that simply involves more other responsibilities during the summer (farms or ranches, homesteads) or involved in church activities such as Bible school or camps that tend to happen during the summer.
Possibly some quilters like to take a seasonal break simply to give their hands, bodies and pocketbooks a break and to create a natural cycle, building up internal interest for starting anew.
If you read this and you think, “NO, no, no - I love to quilt and FINALLY have vacation time and/more longer daylight hours in which to do it!” Or the more obvious one, “No - I’m a teacher and the summer is my sanity saver and I spend as much time as possible quilting/sewing.”
Here in Poland it’s warm, but currently not “HOT”. Today’s high was 77F (25C). It’s just about ideal temps for doing just about anything! I spent today working on our boxes - with help from several other people!
So…what about you all? Is quilting/sewing a seasonal hobby for you?
Do you find yourself with more time/interest in the summer, or is it pretty much the same all year round? Or do you have less time to sew?
Would love to hear from you.
