Summer Vacation

Here in Poland summer has been going about a month. School in Poland traditionally gets out the fourth Friday of June. Then we get all of July and all of August off. School starts again on Sept 1 or the first Monday after the 1st. On that day there is a meeting and the kids actually go to classes on the 2nd.

The school year is what defines “summer” around here as “summer” around here is defined as those two months and a week when kids are off from school.

This year travel has been crazy for many because of all the pent up desire that people haven’t been able to do or felt comfortable doing because of COVID for the last couple of summers.

At the moment we have a young man, Josiah, visiting us for a month. He has been helping me with the quilt packs - a lot! He’s been breaking down boxes, bringing in vinyl packs boxes, packing up, carrying them, helping fill up the room, etc. He’s from Canada.

Then this week we had another lady come to Poland to help Ukrainians on Monday, I think it was. Her name is Rachel. She is not staying with us, however - she is staying at the church building as our other guests are gone.

This summer our weather has been all over the place - from very, very hot (almost 100 F) to quite chilly (in the 50s F) during the day. Currently we are back in a hot spell, though hopefully not quite as hot as 3 weeks ago. But the heat is making my garden grow quickly.

For us, things are about like normal. I’m trying to finish up the boxes of quilts in the next two weeks. I’d LOVE to be done by our birthday, but I don’t believe that’s realistic, so if I could be done by a week beyond it - by August 9 - that would be mighty fine.

As far as our plans - I have no plans for vacation or anything like that. I really am feeling the pressure of these boxes and helping Ukraine. On Monday (in two days) we will be getting in some more house guests who will be here for a few days. So I guess, beyond having our daughter with us (Lydia), our son and daughter-in-law (Tim and Claire) and now some more guests (Tim and his daughter, Rachel), along with Josiah - not much else is going on besides trying to help Ukraine and finishing up this quilt project.

When it is all said and done, I am going to heave a huge sigh of relief - and maybe cry a bit when we pack up that last pack. When my living room is back to being a living room instead of a storage warehouse, I will be so excited!

Lots and lots of pillow here. These were delivered today.

I was over at the garden today and actually so grateful for it. It has helped incredibly with the stress I’ve felt. Zucchini started producing already- I picked the first two today - and pumpkins are forming at a fast pace now. My garden is actually across the street from our house - it’s a long story - but our property is actually split in two pieces due to a road being built years and years ago.

So there you are - mostly I’m trying these days to stay cool.

What are you all doing? Anything special and fun? Are you able to get much sewing done? Tell me!

And have a great day - wherever you are reading this! Thanks for coming along with me on this journey!
