“Two-Time Scrappy”

The back end of the van full of stuff that was needed - the vacuum cleaner for a place where they are housing ladies and kids and the other things to be taken to the fire station for sorting. The boxes are full of - on the left - men’s deodorant - and on the right behind the ketchup - ladies sanitary pads. The multi packs of things above the ketchup are baby wipes in packs of 7. They were marked down to $4.48 so that was a great price for 7 packages of baby wipes.

This one is not my favorite of this series - not by a long shot. BUT, it turned out much, much better than I had thought it would early in the process. The problem I had had to deal with was the background sashing color. I had originally wanted a stronger dark pink but I didn’t have enough of any one piece of second hand fabric and in this particular pattern with all the scrappiness of the interior blocks, I wanted a consistent sashing color.

I ended up going much lighter than I had envisioned and using this lavender.

I was pleasantly surprised by the blocks on this one - and even more when I put it together. Both the light and dark green pieces worked with this particular shade of lavender used in the sashing.

In the end, this is one of the ones I really like how it turned out. It is calm and restful. I was able to use up a lot of scraps in this one as a great bonus towards the end of this series. Both the inside 9 patches are scrappy and the second border for the 9 patches is also scrappy. I just sewed long 2” pieces together and then used them to make the border. Also the inner border on the two sides is very scrappy - I mean, literally, just sewing end to end - pieces of leftover 2” strips.

This is quilt number 34 in the Upcycled Greens series. My greens, by this time, were all pretty bland and a bit of mish mash. You can tell that by checking out the fabrics here.

Here is a bit closer.

And closer

I used many different scraps for that outer border of the blocks. Here you can see. The placement of the individual blocks was random. I tried to not let too many similar ones be together, but sometimes those stronger strips of color just happened to be near each other as in this photo below with the floral with the darker background.

As you can see with this photo, the lighter and darker greens show up against the lavender backdrop.

The backing is all from second-hand fabrics. I am having to do a bit more piecing now to get the backs big enough for these rather large quilts. As I have more than 20 left to quilt in this series, I may have to either resort to using another color for the backings, or I may head to the second-hand store to see what I can find that will go. I’m not there yet, however. At this point, I’m still using what I have.

I’d prefer to just keep using up those second-hand fabrics I have until my shelves get bare. I have so much new stuff - I’d love to get busy using it and pretty much clear out my shelves of second-hand materials.

I’ve not really shown them in pictures because they don’t look so neat. :) It’s two bookcases full. or was. It’s now down to about 1.5 bookcases. I want it to be shortly down to 1.

From a distance.

I did add borders only on the sides of this one because I thought it was long enough, but needed the width. Plus, it’s different.

More close ups.

I used bias cut striped for the binding. I usually use width of fabric for the binding and I’m still deciding whether I actually like working with the bias for binding. I still have some more of this to use up. By the time I finish it all, I may know what I think about it!

Oh…and I did find my baggie of little bonus triangles from the whole series. But after I officially declared the series over — about two days after. Oh well. I can’t say that I’m sad about that. If you don’t know or remember what I’m talking about - just skip it. It’s not all that important. (It’s just a little unfinished thing that some people might like to know but if you are new here, it’s not that to you.)

Once again - as I finish each of these quilts, I’m trying to make sure I have the pattern ready. Here is this one. I gave it the name “Two-Time” scrappy because I used both 2.5” scrappy squares and then the very scrappy borders around the 9 patches and white.

I hope someone can use it.

And as a review - this is the series from the start.
