Weekly Ukraine Efforts
This past week we did a lot - but it was all in prep for the next trip that Mike wants to take to Ukraine.
Let’s review.
Oh - one thing - I have been doing this now for quite a few weeks and sometimes I just don’t remember to take pictures. I try but just as you might not even think about taking pics of things you do often - neither do I always think about it.
Monday
Lena and I bought food to help the local Ukrainian ladies shelter. About 120 women and children and young people live there. I had called on Friday and asked what they needed. Tosia (the house mother) said they needed milk, cleaning supplies for the bathrooms and a couple other things. So we shopped for them and included some over the counter medicine since many people are getting sick these days.
Once we got there, we talked with Tosia and she mentioned that they needed pillows. After talking with her, and finding this out, I asked Lena about the possibility of giving them 10 or 12 of our sets which included pillows. They had had an outbreak of lice and needed some new pillows - and needed to be washable (polyester and not feathers). So Lena and I went back to the church garage and picked out 12 sets and about 30 extra pillowcases and brought them back to the place.
Tuesday
We started getting boxes in that I had ordered over the weekend.
Some are delivered via couriers.
Some we had to pick up ourselves at a package locker near our house. We packed all the boxes that arrived that were for this trip and took it to the garage. Included this time were adult diapers and things like leggings, flashlights and power banks.
Wednesday
After getting in more pillows and a few more blankets, I made up those last 10 sets of the quilts I had gotten in the mail. Then I took them to the church garage. i had gotten in some yellow and blue blankets as I had several blue and yellow quilts.
Thursday
I decided it was time to go shopping to a couple of stores and pick up things I had neither ordered nor had bought to date. I focused mostly on personal hygiene items or just things needed for around the house - not food and not baby food so much. I did pick up a few baby wipes, however and some diapers. I’m not giving them formula or baby food this time.
On Thursday we had a delivery of 50 water pitchers and 100 filters so that each pitcher can have 10 filters for families there in Ukraine.
Friday
I took another load of things in the van to the church garage once again. I had used up the folding sports bags which I uncovered in my dining room, by rolling up a quilts, a blanket, a towel, pillow and pillowcase and rolling it all up into these packs. I also found I had 9 more empty vinyl packs. I decided to just use them up and make up more sets for the garage - to be sent on this last trip (in 2022). I just used our own charity quilts for this.
Saturday
I had too much stuff in the living room once again, and so I packed up everything that was dedicated for Ukraine and took it to the church garage. Pretty much there are the 9 bundles made from the vinyl bundles, 11 of the sports bags and several boxes of pillows.
By now the garage is getting full. On the last trip, we actually had more stuff than we had room for - and Mike didn’t have us pack up the toilet paper. So, we already had a lot of that at the garage. It’s pretty much ready to load up - as we’ll have the food delivered as we pack up.
As you read this, we’ll be packing up the trailer. The weather isn’t looking all that great for a trip this week, but we are hoping to pack the trailer anyway - and if it just sits in our yard and waits for the weather to improve then that is fine. As soon as possible, he can go when the weather makes it possible.
Thanks so much for reading thus far! Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
