Weekly Review of Ukraine Efforts
This past week I did a few things - though I did take some time for things that I needed to do otherwise. Plus I did get back to doing some sewing again.
I’m also still working on organizing all my upcycleds. I uncovered several bags of men’s shirts in my bedroom when I worked on cleaning up a lot of it. I am now working on getting them cut up and put in their appropriate boxes. Once again, I can’t believe I have such a high percentage of blues. I’m not ready to go back to making more UP Blues but I’m amazed. I do need to combine blues with other upcycledes, however - that will help me use them up. But that’s not for now.
Monday
On Monday we had a couple of men come from Ukraine for quilt bundles. We had talked with their contact a while ago now as he had been at our Sunday services. They had requested quilts so I’d been keeping them in mind. Thankfully they came to pick them up and Mike didn’t need to take them!
They are going to the region of Ukraine called Kharkov/Kharkiv - depending on who you are and where you hear the name. This region has been hard hit by Russia and we are thrilled that these quilts are going to this very needy region. Here are those photos.
I had to deal with the men since Mike needed to stay home since he had just tested positive for COVID on Saturday. He wasn’t feeling really well anyway - though not terrible, either.
Here are those photos. We gave them probably 200+ quilt bundles and about 100 baby sets which are in the boxes. We have given out almost all of the baby sets - and that makes us very happy. I’m glad to see these begin their trip to their final destinations.
These men wanted me to tell you THANK YOU from them - they told me multiple times! So, here’s my THANK YOU to all of you who donated or help pack up those quilts to send them over here.
it is starting to get chilly here now and a perfect time to distribute the rest of these quilts.
Thursday-Friday-Saturday-Sunday
What I did pertaining to Ukraine besides ordering a LOT of things on line for Mike’s next trip is to take multiple trips to the church with quilts from my long-arm room. I’m trying to exercise faith and get that room ready now - for a machine. (No word yet - just trying to get ready.)
So, while the room at the church was completely EMPTY after Monday when we loaded all the quilts we had at the church into the van, I knew I had a whole room in the basement at my house full of quilt packs.
The pictures tend to look the same again - so it is hard to show them over and over though these are the actual photos. However, that is what we did.
Load the van.
Bring them to the church.
Unload.
Repeat.
Mike helped me at the house, mostly by bringing up loads of quilts at a time, multiple times a day - though Lena did help some as well. Rachel helped at the church with unloading and stacking.
Stack them in the church building. The first picture shows 150 quilts and then the second one - is 200 quilts.
These next two - about 250 in the first picture and about 300 in the next one. I am taking about 50+ per load in the van.
It had been very warm in the summer when we worked on them and we tried not to open and close the door to the outside as it would get unbearably hot in the house that way. Anyway, we are now moving them from the house to the church. So, I’ll move at least 50 a day. This week I took 1 load on Thursday, 3 loads on Friday, 1 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday. That’s about 300 quilts now at the church where they can be ready for distribution a lot more easily and quickly than in our basement.
Besides I’m trying to exercise faith - getting that LONG ARM room EMPTY - waiting for that machine. :)
I’m starting to get ready for my husband’s next trip now. He’s planning on going on Thursday.
