Tiny Rail Fence top DONE!

In the last blog post referencing this top, I mentioned that I would go ahead and just finish up the top in the next post.

So, I sewed, sewed and sewed some more to make strip sets.

Then I cut a lot.

I cut too many, as usual. After cutting it all up, piling it into stacks to count, I figured I had made too many!

Little stacks of 10 of these units.

So, instead of adding 4 more rows, I actually added 5 more rows!

So once again, after making the 5 rows, I took them downstairs to check for mistakes.

Sadly, I had done it again. Thankfully, only one of the rows had an issue.

June 5 update

After fixing the mistake, I went ahead and added those rows to the already completed section from last time.

This makes the top about 105” long - and I like the look just fine!

I spread this out over several days - as it was a lot of work to make the strips, then the little rows of 4 for the blocks. Then, all the pressing, and finally putting the blocks together. Once I got the blocks together, putting the rows of 11 together went relatively quickly. Of course, horsing the top around under the machine gets a bit unwieldy towards the end.

This top ended up being about 90”x105”. At least that is what it is on the computer - I’ve not actually put a tape to it.

These units finish at 2” once sewn into the quilt.

Once again, folks, this is a quilt made up of one single unit - a rail fence unit featuring a 1.5”x2.5” black strip and a 1.5”x2.5” strip that is a pastel color. The beauty of this very simple top is that it is just this simple.

This block is 8.5”x8.5” until it is sewn into the quilt top. Finishes at 8”.

I spent some time rolling the top and trimming off strings - probably 20+ minutes worth.

This allows you to see some closeups of the fabrics I used.

Thankfully, this one is done. I’m ready to move on from this one. In spite of it’s sheer simplicity, I am quite satisfied with it.

While I can’t say I see any difference in my bag of 1.5” strips, at the same time, I know I’ve had some effect. I was picking through my bag searching for yellow strips for the sections in this last quilt top, and I couldn’t find many yellows! In the end, I did manage to find some, but I really had to search.

That tells me I already used them up in this quilt top!

That’s one great thing!

Sorry for the tilt- I had my camera at an odd angle. It’s straight. :)

Thanks so much for coming along on this journey with me!

Have a great day wherever you are reading!
