Bonus Top from Sheet of Stamps

I asked you a while back which top was the best from the pieces leftover from Sheet of Stamps. I then gave you quite a few variations to choose from and asked you what you thought.

I took everything into account. However, I, myself, was not totally happy with the choices I had given you.

So, I went back to the program and worked on it some more.

I wanted to use them ALL. I had 20 of those pieces and I needed a pattern that could use that many - and that was a problem as some of the designs used less or more - not that many.

Then I decided to try to think outside the box a bit and change it up.

I came up with this design.

And I liked it.

about 73”x95”

So I decided to go ahead and tackle this one - this week.

I was unsure about the pieces - I’ll admit. I had a bit of fear and trepidation when putting those cut off portions from the original top on the black and then making those large blocks.

I ended up trimming the blocks to 15”. I had thought they would be 15.5” but I just couldn’t get it nicely from that. So I decided to just use my 15” square ruler and trimming all down to 15”. This means they finish at 14.5” once it is sewn together.

Here is a photo of the pieces I needed for this top. I will not make up a pattern for this quilt top as it is such a specific pattern - I mean, I used the LEFTOVERS (cutoffs from the side setting blocks which became triangles) from the Sheet of Stamps. How many people are going to do that? Not many, if any.

and here is the finished top

So…do I like it?

Yes, very much so.

It might be difficult to explain how much I like it - partly because you can’t understand how much I like the original top - the blocks were cut off from (Sheet of Stamps). Since I loved that one so much, I think that the red, black and white pop that was added to this - for me, it’s mighty fine.

But then, I made it. Often we aren’t very unbiased about our own sewing. Usually we think what we make is the best - sort of like our children or grandkids. They are the best, the most talented, the brightest, prettiest, etc. I mean, aren’t they really?

Anyway, I sometimes give my quilts or tops a number out of 10. We’ll see what I end up giving this when I’m all done. As a design, I’m very happy with it - because I was able to use up all of the leftover HST blocks I had and not waste any of them. That makes this one a 9.5-10/10 to me.

By making the top and bottom in red instead of continuing the design, I was able to make it work out perfectly. By using the sashing in there, it gave me a little wiggle room for not exact matching of the pieces - though I tried to make them close.

I guess we’ll see what I think when it’s all done - but for now - I’m very happy with it. I am more pleased with it than the other choices I had been thinking about. There is just something about black, red, and white as a combination!

Thanks again so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading this!
