Cultural: Price Check

It’s been about a year or more since I did a blog post with some basic food (and more) supplies.

Yes, inflation has been bad for us here as it has been for you.

So today I went to Lidl and bought a few things. They have self-checkout and I used that.

I thought I’d buy 10 common items and get them, take a photo of them and share with you how much they cost me.

I ended up buying 12 different items but several times more than one of each.

I’m shopping at a deep discount store - Lidl - and many of you don’t have such a store nearby and will be mentally comparing a regular price grocery store such as Kroger, Publix, Ralph’s or Winn Dixie to these prices.

Our main regular price grocery store closed this summer - the one that felt like it was from the states.

I’m sad about that as they carried things that other stores didn’t always carry.

So if you have an Aldi or Lidl or Save-a-lot, compare these prices with that as I shopped at that type of store.

This is the kind of store that leaves things on the shelves in boxes, and you pack your own groceries and bring your own bags or pay for them (which is everywhere now here in Poland).

I used self-checkout so I did it all by myself. I actually don’t mind - most of the time.

Here’s what I got:

Except for the Pepsi Max and the Whiskas - these are store brands by Lidl

  • Large eggs - 1 carton of 10 - $2.06 - (about $0.21 per egg) (we never had the ridiculous prices you had in the states)

  • boneless chicken breast - almost 1 kg or 2.17 lbs. - reg price - $5.43 on sale for $3.95 - ($2.50/lb.)

  • nectarines - 1 kg or 2.2 lbs. - $2.18/kg ($0.99/lb.)

  • cocoa - one 200 gram package or 7 ounces - $1.49 ($3.40/lb.)

  • butter - 3 packages of 200 grams each (about 7 ounces each) - total of 1.32 lbs. ($0.92 - 7 oz. package) - this was on sale if you bought 3 - regular price is much higher - (don’t know as I don’t normally buy this)

  • cheddar cheese - 300 grams or 10.5 ounces - $2.30/package ($3.44/lb.)

  • 4 small yogurts - 150 grams or 5.2 oz each - $0.31/each

  • 3 apple pastries - $0.61 each or $1.83 for all three

  • Pepsi Max - I bought 3 - 2packs (total 6 bottles) of 2.5 liter bottles - $10.00 or $1.66 for a 2.5 liter bottle!

regular price of Pepsi Max which I was going to buy just for this blog post is $2.18 for 2 liters but the ones I got were a special buy

  • Whiskas dry cat food - 1.4 kg or 3 lbs. - $6.21

  • Lidl brand real vanilla ice cream - 2 liters or just over 1/2 gallon - regular price $3.45 per liter but it was on sale so today it was $4.48 for two liters or about 1/2 gallon

  • sugar - 1 kg or 2.2 lbs. - $1.03 ($2.33 for 5 lbs.)

    Total spent - 172.52 PLN or $39.74

Right now the exchange rate here in Poland is great for us - and “they say” it will be good through the election in Mid October. LOL This makes the prices better for us than say, three weeks ago.

If the exchange rate was worse, these prices would be higher in $$. However, it’s just the life of someone living with an alternate currency than the US Dollar since our funding comes from the states.

There were some other things I could have purchased, but I just don’t need them right now - not at all - so I passed (oil, for example - both sunflower oil or olive oil).

So..how do these prices compare to your local stores? I tried to convert things into ounces or lbs so you could compare to the same things in our area. Sometimes our packages are so small here that it is difficult to compare prices without taking the time to do the conversion. For example, sugar and flour are sold here in a kg package which is 2.2 lbs. and the usual size in the USA (used to be, anyway) was 5 lbs.

And that’s it. I made it a short list so it would be a bit easier on me to do all those conversions - from kgs to lbs. and from Polish zlotys to USD. It meant there were several calculations for each item.

Enjoy!

Thanks so much for coming along with me on this journey!

Have a great day wherever you are reading.

Be sure to check out what my sis has for you in the store here!

Feel free to browse the site.

Oh - to make this more interesting, I’ve gotten Rachael, my sis, to agree to buy these same things (as much as possible) at a Save-A-Lot that is in Florida, send me pics and a receipt and I can do a comparison post.

Coming soon.
